Doug Westberg's Steely Dan Memoribilia Collection on DougWestberg.com
I got inspired to start collecting Steely Dan by my brother Rich, who, despite my going gonzo with the collecting thing, will never be supplanted as the pre-eminent Dan fanatic in the family.  It was he who first told me about the You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It soundtrack and the first Dan single (Sail The Waterway and Dallas) which never made it onto an album, as well as the fact that Decade Of Steely Dan preserves Walter's original guitar solo on "FM", while Steely Dan Gold and Citizen Steely Dan substitute a saxophone (Pete Christlieb, I believe).
Steely Dan is my absolute favorite group, and I have a dozen of their songs in my performing repertoire, far more than any other artist except me.  I credit Steely Dan as a major influence on me as a composer, particularly my Sometimes I Imagine Asking Joni, In My Heart, and Cyber-Pal.  Even when I am not consciously emulating them, they are a constant inspiration to excellence.
Besides the fact that I adore them, I thought also that because Steely Dan was so unavaricious and protective about things like outtakes and ancillary marketing, they would be a band for which I could reasonably hope to collect a respectable sampling of memorabilia and rarities.  If I started collecting the Beatles, it would be like "where do I start?" and the real rarities would be too expensive.  I've gotten many of these items, but by no means all--probably not even half, off E-Bay.  I've also gotten items at the music store, used record stores, collectors shows, and concerts.  Some of my most prized items were found in record stores.  My daughter got me one cd at a record store in Greenwich Village.

I collect what interests me, and don't attempt to be exhaustively comprehensive.  I don't even have all of the "big 7" ABC/MCA studio albums on CD!  I particularly like to find cover recordings of Fagen or Becker/Fagen songs. I have Fagen/Becker-Fagen songs recorded by Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Rickie Lee Jones, Jennifer Warnes, John Kay, Larry Carlton, Woody Herman, and Manhattan Transfer.  On the other hand, I have little interest at the moment in collecting magazine articles.
Granted, this is just one or two notches above a blog, but maybe you'll see something here that you didn't know was out there.  If you enjoy this on any level, I'd love to hear from you.
