Football 101 – November 2005
By Melanie Cook
What more could we ask for? A bright sunny Saturday, a chilly November
morning, and a truck full of girls with football on their minds! With Toni at the wheel, Traci & Melanie
riding shotgun, we headed for M & T Stadium for the first Raven’s Football
101.
Arriving early, we joined a line of
purple-clad ladies with thoughts of Todd Heap and Matt Stover dancing in our
heads. After paying $20.00 for
admission, we were given generous goodie bags, including a purple jersey
backpack, and official NFL Sports Maps. Finally,
we broke free of the crowd and the three of us stood staring from the
portal. We felt very small as the huge
stadium surrounded us.
What a thrill it was to run down the stadium
steps and onto the field! It is enormous
from that angle, especially when we see it mostly on TV! We all took turns lying down on the 50-yard
line for photos and giggles. Then, it
was time to get down to the business of football. Each group of girls was assigned to an
assistant coach for 10 minutes of training, after which we rotated to another
coach for the next lesson. We learned
passing, throwing, and kicking in a fun and non-competitive atmosphere.
After a couple of hours “on the field”, we
rested up in the locker room. It was
exciting to see the player’s uniforms hanging above each locker, and we were
allowed to take photos but not to touch anything. Melanie found that out the hard way!
From there we headed inside the stadium for
more fun events. Traci suited up as a
football player, complete with padding, helmet and cleats. Melanie suited up as Poe (the mascot) with
gigantic shoes, and purple bird head and beak.
It smelled very bad but we had fun anyway!
Several players were on hand for photos and
autographs. Toni & Traci maneuvered
their way to the front of a long line, and got photos of Traci & Jamal
Lewis. After that excitement, we were
done for the day and headed home to the Elmwood for adult refreshments. Traci purred the whole way home.

are thinking it will be fun to be out on the field with the stadium lights on!
