This Award is designed to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and to honor Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her courage and determination in continuing to work for peace and world brotherhood. The Award which was first made in 1979 is presented annually by the Social Responsibilities Round Table of the American Library Association to an African American illustrator for an outstandingly inspirational and educational book published during the previous year. When the author is not also the illustrator the author's name appears in parentheses after the illustrator's name in the following table.
