Nominees for and the winners of the Macavity Awards are voted on by members of Mystery Readers International, the largest mystery fan organization. The Macavity Award is named for the "mystery cat" of T.S. Eliot (Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats). The award for best first mystery novel was first presented in 1987.
