The National Outdoor Book Awards, established in 1997, aim to honor the best in outdoor writing and publishing. Winners are selected by a panel of judgesactive in outdoor and environmental axctivities and studies. The 17 judges in 1999 included a biologist, ornithologist, naturalist, oudoor guide, publisher and journalist. Awards are made in several categories including History-Biography, Nature and the Environment, Oudoor Adventure Guidebook, Nature Guidebook and Oudoor Literature. Winners in the latter category are listed below.
