STICHOMANCY

Another name for bibliomancy. A form of divination by randomly chosing a word or verse and interpreting an oracular meaning from it to answer an inquirer's question usually concerning a course for future action.

Stichomancy is one of the oldest forms of divination (at least 3000 years old in fact), in which the querant opens to a random page of a randomly selected book in a library, to find an excerpt that applies to the situation at hand. Common forms of stichomancy are I Ching readings (in which one consults the ancient Chinese Book of Changes) and Bibliomancy (in which one consults a Holy Book such as the Bible or the Koran). In order to give you the widest possible experience, our library includes hundreds of the most interesting and famous books and documents in literature. Readings from a particular genre are the most popular, especially the Adventure, Bible, and Horror genres. —Excerpted from Facade.com

Stichomancy or Bibliomancy is a form of divination that seeks to know the future by randomly selecting a passage from a book, frequently a sacred text. The most common procedure involves placing the book on its spine, and with eyes closed, allowing the book to fall open to a random page. Then, with the eyes still closed place a finger on the open page and read the passage indicated."
