Hotels -- New England Shootout How to get thrown out of the gym 5th and 6th Grade Boys Massachusetts State Travel Championship | NORTH ANDOVER HANGS ON, North Andover built a 12-point lead over Stoughton early in the second half and then had to hang on for dear life in a furious final two minutes in winning, 62-58, in the championship game of second annual Grade 8 Youth Basketball State Championship tournament, held this past weekend at the Mansfield SportsPlex and Wheaton College in Norton. Getting most of its production from Drex Costello and Dereck Collins, North Andover charged to a 56-44 lead with 6:10 left in the game before Stoughton battled back and closed the gap. Stoughton trailed 60-56 and had the ball with under a minute left but couldn’t connect and North Andover clinched the game at the free throw line. Collins finished the game with 25 points, setting a championship-game scoring record. His seven free throws in the game also broke the championship-game record. Costello finished with 21 points and set a tournament championship-game record with three 3-pointers. North Andover had finished with a 16-2 record in Merrimack Valley League play, while Stoughton was 9-3 and won the Metro West League playoff championship. The champions opened pool play by winning two games in Mansfield, defeating Easton (Metro West) and undefeated Cape Cod League champion Falmouth. NA set a tournament record by scoring 91 points in the Falmouth victory. In the state semifinals at Wheaton, NA turned back Milford before topping Stoughton for the title. |
