Amanda Carr and the American
Song Book in Taunton
March 16 7pm
TAUNTON – Amanda Carr, the internationally-known New England jazz
vocalist, is an inheritor to the great tradition of American female
jazz singers in a direct line from Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah
Vaughan. Her delectable new album, “Soon,” has been universally
hailed by critics and the singer herself draws praise from such
knowledgeable jazz writers as Nat Hentoff of the Wall Street Journal
and Ernie Santosuosso of the Globe.
The award-winning singer will bring her band to Steve’s Backstage
Pass, 15 School St., Taunton, Ma. March 16 for a rare and intimate
cabaret performance. Tickets are $10 for the 7 p.m. show.
The daughter of big band vocalist Nancy Carr and trumpet player Nick
Capezuto, Carr earned her stripes singing rock and pop tunes. But
for the past several years has concentrated on reinterpreting jazz
classics with a fresh voice and new insights.
Singing since the age of 5, the award-winning jazz performer has
compiled an array of impressive accomplishments and minted an
expanding body of work that includes performing with the Glenn
Miller Band and the Artie Shaw Orchestra and composing original
music for PBS. She has also sung with major orchestras and opened
Boston Red Sox games on numerous occasions by singing the National
Anthem.
Carr’s performance is a highlight for the growing Sunday Night Jazz
audience at Steve’s Backstage Pass and one of several events marking
the second anniversary of the School Street music club, bar and
restaurant. Owned by impresario Steve Toli, SBP features a clean,
family-friendly atmosphere, café seating and an intimate performance
atmosphere.
Sunday Night Jazz is hosted by musician-music journalist Rick
Foster.
