It would seem that Stan McDonald has the perfect solution for the
problem of the shrinking audience for Dixieland/Traditional Jazz. He
imports one! An enthusiastic group from the Ukraine attended the
September 6 performance by the Blue Horizon 5 at Ma Glockner’s.

Richard Malcolm drums, Stu Gunn tuba, Royce
Anderson guitar, Phil Person trumpet, Stan McDonald soprano sax and
clarinet. |
|
Also of note was
the presence of two different faces in the band. Phil Person very
ably held down the trumpet chair and Richard Malcolm was the drummer. |

Even when Stan chose tunes that
he has played in recent previous performances at Glockner’s, the
presence of these different musicians added a new twist to the
tunes. Additional variety was provided through the ability of Stu
Gunn to play both tuba and string bass –and no, not at the same time.

Royce Anderson, guitar, is Director of the
International Center at Clark University in Worcester. He and his
wife Nadia are bringing visitors from all over the world to
experience the only art form created in the United States - Jazz. |
