The Dave Brubeck Quartet and the Providence Singers Kick-Off Dedication Weekend for the New Immaculate Conception Catholic Regional School

Cranston, RI – Renowned jazz artist Dave Brubeck and his quartet will perform at Immaculate Conception Church on Dec. 4 at 8 pm. The event, which is open to the public, is the first of a weekend full of special activities to celebrate the dedication of the new Immaculate Conception Regional Catholic Regional School.

“We are honored to have the amazing Dave Brubeck playing for the Immaculate Conception dedication,” said Reverend Ronald E. Brassard, the pastor at the church. “This special program featuring spiritual music and jazz is the perfect way to bless and celebrate our new school.”

One of this year’s honorees at the 32nd Annual Kennedy Center Honors, Brubeck has also been named a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress, and a “Jazz Master” by the National Endowment for the Arts, among countless other honors from the United States and around the world. His contributions as both pianist and composer during his six-decade career have been honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

“This will be a rare opportunity to see and hear one of the all-time jazz greats in the intimate setting of our church sanctuary,” said Father Brassard.  “The furthest seat will only be 50 feet from the stage,” he added.

Brubeck, 88, learned piano at age 4, but took a detour from music to work as a cowboy on his parents’ ranch at the foothills of the Sierras, and to attend college as a pre-med student with the thought of going into veterinary medicine. He eventually switched his major to music, when he found himself increasingly involved with jazz, playing piano in local nightclubs to help pay his way through college. The rest of his career is history, as he became one of the world’s leading jazz musicians, injecting the genre with a unique set of Brubeck trademarks such as odd time signatures, improvised counterpoint and distinctive harmonies.

At the Immaculate Conception concert, the Dave Brubeck Quartet will play jazz selections and be joined by the Providence Singers and a live orchestra for a performance of his “Canticles” and “God’s Love Made Visible.”

Ticket prices are:  $80.00, $55.00 and $45.00.  Ticket prices do not include tax and applicable fees.  Performance begins at 8pm.  Tickets go on sale Monday, October 26 at www.ticketweb.comm.
