Jazz manouche
- literally "gypsy jazz" - is the name given to
a kind of music born in France in the early
1930s. But for the huge mass of devoted
performers and followers throughout the world
today, it's more than a kind of music - it's a
way of life; it's a religion. The Lord and
Master of jazz manouche was Django
Reinhardt, a gypsy born in Belgium in 1910. He
began playing guitar when he was very young, but
at the age of eighteen, his left hand was
severely burned when his caravan caught on
fire. His third and fourth fingers were
deformed and virtually useless. When he finally
began performing again, he emerged a better
guitar player than he was before the accident.
The violinist Itzhak Perlman once said, "You
know, sometimes it is the artist's task to find
out how much music you can still make with what
you have left."
In 1934 Django
began a series of recordings with a group called
the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. These
recordings have become the foundation for a
massive legacy of Django aficionados throughout
the world. I was bitten by the Django bug
while living in Paris in the early 1990s, and
since then have been searching for opportunities
to play jazz manouche. In 2004 I met
guitarist Tom Landman, who introduced me to
other members of the gypsy jazz community, and
Fête Manouche was born. Since then, we have
been making Django's music accessible to the New
York audience. Our performance at the Bickford
Theatre will mark our first New Jersey
appearance.

NEW RELEASES

DAN LEVINSON'S TRANS-ATLANTIC SAXTETTE
Invokes the Six Brown Brothers
The Six Brown
Brothers were a saxophone-playing vaudeville
troupe during the teens and twenties, who
enjoyed phenomenal popularity and helped to
launch the saxophone craze that swept across
America beginning around 1915. As the first
saxophone ensemble to make records, they spawned
dozens of imitators and inspired a generation of
young musicians to take up the instrument.
Ghosts of the
Saxophone
brings together an
all-star aggregation of reedmen from both sides
of the Atlantic: Paul Lindemeyer, Vince Giordano
and I from the American side; world-renowned
jazz legend Bob Wilber and two of his protégés,
Nik Payton and Alex Mendham, from the British
side (although Mr. Wilber is actually a
transplanted American).
With informative
liner notes by Bruce Vermazen, the undisputed
authority on the Six Brown Brothers and author
of That Moaning Saxophone: The Six Brown
Brothers and the Dawning of a Musical Craze,
Ghosts of the Saxophone is a
delightfully entertaining voyage into the world
of ragtime saxophone, a vital yet largely
unexplored chapter in the instrument's
evolution.
These 22
saxophonic melodramas will transport you back to
a glorious moment in time when six ghostly
figures, their silvery horns gleaming, tripped
the light fantastic into the star-studded
firmament, before vanishing along with their era
into the Sea of Oblivion.
