JAZZ COMPOSERS' ALLIANCE ORCHESTRA

IN CONCERT AT YMCA THEATRE IN CAMBRIDGE MA ON SATURDAY, MARCH 1

On Saturday, March 1, at 8 pm, at the Cambridge YMCA Theatre, the Jazz Composers Alliance will present a program of creative music featuring compositions for the 18-piece JCA Orchestra by resident composers Darrell Katz, the returning Bob Pilkington, Warren Senders, and Norm Zocher. Also included will be a piece by special guest composer, alto saxophonist Jim Hobbs, of the Fully Celebrated Orchestra. The Cambridge Family YMCA Theatre is located at 820 Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square, Cambridge. Admission is $12/$8 for seniors & students.

The Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra has been a fixture on Boston's creative music scene for over two decades, since the first performance in December of 1985. Combining dedicated musicianship, innovative programming and fresh compositional ideas, their concerts are musically diverse and exciting events. The JCA Orchestra has released four CDs since 2003, including the critically acclaimed
In, Thru and Out, (Cadence), The Death of Simone Weil, (Innova) and Celebration of the Spirit. (C.I.M.P.), all of which feature the widely varied writing of the JCA resident composers. The Same Thing will be released this spring on Cadence Jazz Records.
Alto saxophonist, guest composer Jim Hobbs, is the leader of the critically acclaimed quartet, Fully Celebrated Orchestra, and has been a featured soloist with the JCA Orchestra for eight years or more. "No one today is playing the alto better than Hobbs," says Paul Olson of of AboutJazz.com, "...the vast range of tones he summons from the small horn is altogether remarkable..." Stephen Loewy, of Cadence Magainze says "..his superb writing...mixes tempos, time signatures, harmonies and timbre..." And Jon Garelick, of The Boston Phoenix asks, "Is alto player Jim Hobbs the best saxophonist in Boston?"

Drawing on influences that span the history of jazz and encompass the world's musical traditions, Katz, Pilkington, Senders and Zocher bring together a huge palette of sounds, structures and conceptions to make the JCA Orchestra's concerts unique "big band" experiences. Many of the band's featured soloists are bandleaders and composers in their own right, and are some of New England's most creative musicians, including Hiro Honshuku (flute), Jim Hobbs (alto sax), Phil Scarff (tenor sax), Pablo Bencid (drums), David Harris (trombone) and Rebecca Shrimpton (voice).

The Jazz Composers Alliance would also like to announce that it has received operating support from The Massachusetts Cultural Council and The Aaron Copland Foundation for 2008.
