Local Composer Premieres Silent Movie Score the classic 1922 F. W. Murnau silent film. Two Performances: Date: Sunday, October 31st, 2010 - Halloween!
Noted composer/trumpet virtuoso Mark Tipton, will be premiering
his original score for the 1922 silent movie, Nosferatu on two
upcoming dates. The score is written for, and features Tipton's
jazz/classical chamber ensemble, Les Sorciers Perdus.
Performances will be Halloween night, October 31st, at One
Longfellow Square - and Sunday Nov. 14th, at Mayo Street Arts
Center.
Mark Tipton is a Portland based musician who, at 30, has already
had a rich and varied career. Equally comfortable in jazz and
classical music, he has had the opportunity to perform with
numerous legendary musicians including Doc Severinsen, Vassar
Clements, Quincy Jones and Bobby McFerrin. Mark currently works
with a variety of ensembles and is on the faculty at Colby
College and U Maine Augusta.
Tipton is a prolific composer. He has also had a long
fascination with the silent film era. Two years ago he
premiered a score for the film, The Golem. His current project
features a score for the classic 1922 film Nosferatu. Directed
by the great German expressionist film maker F.W.Murnau,
Nosferatu is a powerful and beautiful film. The very first
"Dracula" movie, it was recently ranked #21 in a list of the 100
best films of world cinema.
Tipton's score draws on elements of classical music, jazz and
world music, while featuring his own compositional voice. The
score was written for Tipton's chamber ensemble, Les Sorcier
Perdus, which includes some of Portland's best musicians and
features the unique instrumentation of trumpet, flute/bass
flute, violin, cello, guitar, bass and drums. These promise to
be great concert/film performances (and a one of a kind
Halloween night). Spread the word - and don't miss it!
