Monte Carlo Jazz Ensemble
at Ma Glockner's

Robin Verdier brought the Monte Carlo Jazz Ensemble to Ma Glockner's with Robin Verdier piano; Craig Ball clarinet, Bob MacInnis cornet, John clark on alto sax, Rick MacWilliams tuba, Bill Reynolds drums.  (Ed Reynolds, observing.)

We can always count on Robin to present superior,  intricately arranged, memorable jazz.

This Blue Ribbon ensemble featured danceable music of the 20s, 30s, and 40s, still fresh and harmonious in the hands of these finest New England musicians.  The front line, Bob, Craig and John were definitely in sync, impelled by Robin's incredible piano.  John Clark played terrific alto sax all evening!  Walter Donaldson's 1934 OK Toots, was a nice 2-step. Tiny Parham's Now That I've Found You was played by MacInnis on gentle, muted trumpet, Billy on woodblock, carefully following the charts - he hasn't played with this band in almost 10 years.

With Art Burns and Al Bernard unable to make it, we were fortunate to have the talents of Bill Reynolds on drums and Rick MacWilliams, tuba.  (Ed Reynolds was in the audience, supervising. Bill & Ed Reynolds, of the Back Bay Stompers, have had a long history with this band.)

Some of the tunes came from the early 'Talkies', when the movies were bad, but the music was great, such as the nice peppy number, If I Had a Talking Picture of You.  Swipsey Cakewalk, a real cakewalk, was popular in Europe 107 years ago.  The 1910 King Chanticleer was the period before jazz was even called jazz, when they only played marches and harmonies. Marvelous cornet and drumming - Robin was beaming!  They really had all the pieces in order!

Sweet Melody integrated more fine drumming and tuba.  For a bit of variation, Bob took out the flugelhorn for Suzie, as Billy worked the wood block & cymbals.  The tuba introduced Southern Sunset, the front line providing exceptional ensemble work, including a HOT clarinet feature by Craig Ball.  It was a fabulous, fun evening.

Unfortunately, Ma Glockner's succumbed to the depression, and after over 70 years of serving many generations, they have closed it's doors.  They are hoping for a miracle, that a restaurant chef or family will reopen it in the future.

Following is the flyer for this evening:
