KEN STEINER AND HIS
JAZZ BABIES July 1
Bassist Ken Steiner steps out in front to lead Ken Steiner’s
Jazz Babies. Ken is the bassist for “Lost in the Sauce”, the
very popular band that has been playing at the Sherborn Inn
since 1999. Ken brings with him Lost in the Sauce bandmates
clarinetist and reed man Craig Ball and drummer Dave Bragdon.
Rounding out the Jazz Babies are trumpet player Dave Whitney
and guitarist Mike DiBari, both very active musicians
in the Boston scene. Ken is also excited about introducing
vocalist Tyra Penn to the Sherborn Inn. Tyra is
taking a break from her Army of Snakes to be a baby for the
night. In honor of this momentous occasion, we will be
known as Ken Steiner and his Army of Babies for this night only
(I think).
THAT OLD FEELING
July 8
That Old Feeling is a novelty group that emulates some of the
great swing and society bands of the 1930's and 40's. The sweet childlike voice of
Lynnette DeCoste Alameddine, Steve Hershman's
warmth and versatility with elements
of stride piano form the core of the group. The
other musicians to be announced. The evening will be like a throwback to
one on the most fun eras in musical history. Whether you listen,
dance or sing-along, you're sure to have a good time.
STAN McDONALD'S
BLUE HORIZON JAZZ BAND July 15, August 19, September 16

hot and danceable tradition from New Orleans to early swing.
Stan McDonald, soprano sax and
clarinet, Jeff Stout trumpet, Gerry
Gagnon trombone, Ross Petot piano, Al Ehrenfreid
string bass, Dave Bragdon drums. The members --whose ages
span five decades--dig to the roots of jazz and present a varied
and succulent repast, fulfilling their motto: The Future of
the music with a Past!
NEW
BLACK EAGLE JAZZ BAND July 22
Now in their 37th year – the Black Eagles
continue to purvey their own brand of classic jazz. Led by
cornetist Tony Pringle, the NBEJB has Bill Novick
on clarinet and alto saxophone, Stan Vincent on trombone,
Bob Pilsbury on piano, Peter Bullis on banjo,
Barry Bockus on string bass, and “Pam” Pameijer or
Bill Reynolds on drums, and lovingly performs the music of
Armstrong, Morton, Oliver, Bechet, Ellington and others.
SWING TIMES FIVE July
29, September 23
Ross Petot (piano) is one of the gems of the local music scene,
and when he plays from his book of favorites, he really shines.
Jeff Hughes (cornet, flugel) joins in the celebration, supported
by simpatico players Justin Meyer (string bass), Dan Weiner
(guitar), and Dave Didriksen (drums). Their repertoire explores
diverse corners of the American songbook, with lots of
Ellington, Strayhorn, Gershwin, Porter, Kern, and
Arlen, including many seldom-heard numbers. Come for a swinging
evening of relaxation and reminiscence.
RIVERBOAT STOMPERS
August 5
For nearly twenty years, the amazing Stompers have becme known
for their visceral, high-octane excitement, as well as their
musical adventurousness. Audiences have greatly enjoyed
their openness to requests and humorous banter. They play
the familiar traditional jazz oeuvre, while expanding on
standard arrangements, introducing little known pieces, and
adapting from other genres. The musicians: Phil Hower,
piano; Richard Malcolm, drums; Larry Baxter,
trumpet and vocals; Steve Straus, clarinet/soprano sax
and vocals; Frank Batchelor, trombone; Dave
MacMillan, banjo and vocals; Pierre Lemieux, tuba.
Also, tonight Jeff Hughes will sit in on trumpet!
MONTE CARLO JAZZ
ENSEMBLE August 12
The Monte Carlo Jazz Ensemble plays jazz and hot dance
musical arrangements following the model of exciting bands of
the Roaring Twenties like the Dixie Syncopators, the Red Hot
Peppers, and the Cotton Pickers. The musicians are Bob
MacInnis, cornet and fluegelhorn; John Clark and
Craig Ball, clarinet and saxophones; Al Bernard,
tuba; Billy Reynolds, drums; and Robin Verdier, piano,
arranger, and leader.
LOST IN THE SAUCE
August 26
This five-piece swingin’ combo is a favorite at the Inn.
The players draw on diverse musical experiences and inspirations
to deliver a fresh approach to Chicago-style jazz, from classic
jazz and swing ballads to riffing jump tunes. Craig Ball
plays as hot a BG-inspired clarinet as can be heard anywhere,
and Jeff Hughes contributes with his melodic cornet and
flugelhorn. Richie Giordano is the area’s prime
boogie-woogie pianist, and a top-notch stride stylist. Ken
Steiner propels the beat with his imaginative string bass,
and Dave Bragdon provides sure-footed rhythm with his
creative drumming. Special guests will be dad & son team of
Don & Jack Alessi. Jack is a singer in the Sinatra
tradition, and member of the dynamic trio, The Three Swinging
Tenors. Don is one of the great jazzmen of our time.
Performing with many notables over a career spanning nearly 70
years, he continues to play with amazing fleetness and
creativity. A swingin’ evening is guaranteed!
MOLLY MALONE WITH SINTI RHYTHM
Sept 2
Molly, long recognized for her flirty, vintage style, combines
the pulse and repertoire of the early swing era with the nuance
and intimacy of a chanteuse. In this formation she shares her
talents with a new and exciting gypsy jazz ensemble,
Sinti Rhythm.
The charm and virtuosity of their 1930s Parisian style, string
based rhythm reminiscent of Django Reinhardt's Quintette du Hot
Club de France,
is irresistible. Performinig with her for the first time at the
Sherborn Inn are
Jack Soref
- guitar,
Rob Saunders
- guitar,
Andy Moore
- clarinet,
Matt Ambrose
- bass, and special guest
Matt
Glaser
on violin.
WOLVERINE JAZZ BAND
September 9
Since 1995 the Wolverine Jazz Band has been entertaining
lovers of Traditional Jazz all over Boston and southern New
England. In Massachusetts alone, they have raised the roof at
the Sherborn Inn, crisped the leaves at sundry Town Green summer
concerts, and flaked the varnish on church pews in the Boston
suburbs. Jeff Hughes-trumpet, Jimmy Mazzy-banjo,
Tom Boates-trombone, Ross Petot-piano, Rick
MacWilliams-tuba, Dave Didriksen-drum, and
John Clark-reeds/leader, the Wolverines play a selection of
standards and jazz tunes from the Jazz-Era and beyond.
DAVE WHITNEY QUINTET
September 30th
The dean of swing trumpet will bring his quintet with a
mixture of Traditional Jazz, Swing, and surprises from the
repertoire of the swing bands of the 30's and 40's. Along
with Dave's trumpet and vocals, the lineup will include Ben
Goldstein reeds; Jon Wheatley, guitar; Mark
Carlsen, string bass; and Reid Jorgensen, drums.
SHERBORN OUT The Sherborn Out
is only steps away from the Sherborn Inn. Follow the path to your
right as you exit the Inn. You can find many gourmet treats,
special wines, cheeses, frozen hors d’oeuvres, scrumptious desserts,
and excellent take-out dinners. One of Ellen’s favorites: Shrimp &
scallop cakes.
