23rd The Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival
Freight Train Five
| The Freight
Train Five Traditional Jazz Band in the every sense of the word, continues into its 29th year at the
historic Griswold Inn, in Essex, Connecticut.
The founders have a long history - Harry Arnold,
leader/trombone and Bob Card, reeds, were on a Coast Guard Band
together for 25 years.
Harry took the first chorus with a slow,
heartrending trombone on Old Rugged Cross. Special Guest
Steve Cryan "The Man" also plays trombone - both trombones were
featured on Careless Love. Marvelous! Cryan
substituted harmonica for the piano, with a superb arrangement of
Blues For Everyone. Steve Kaler was on guitar. |
| The heart of this
band on snare drum, rimshots and nice stop cymbal was Tom Palinko. |
 |
Drummer extraordinaire, Tom Palinko’s
reputation is solid in this area; he’s only been with the band for
ten years, but is its relentless driver. He concluded the set
with an explosive drum solo on Caravan.
The 'Gris' in Essex Connecticut opened it's
doors in 1776. George Washington, Mark Twain, Albert Einstein,
Katherine Hepburn all stayed here. Catch this fine band
here every Thursday night 7-9:30 PM. |
