This Festival Band consists of a
group of New England musicians, who assemble once a year and ‘jam’. Led
by Scott Philbrick, they are a solid, tight band, with Scott
on cornet/guitar and Dave Whitney trumpet/vocals, Craig Ball
clarinet, Charlie Bornemann trombone/vocals. Drummer Ted DesPlantes
took over the piano (filling in for Ed Metz) so Steve Taddeo
filled in on drums. Al Bernard is on tuba, Mike Hashem
banjo. All Pros in their own right.
|
|
One of our favorite tuba players, and also one of
the nicest guys on the planet, Albie Bernard of Gloucester,
Massachusetts was honored in The Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz
Festival program book - for both. |
 |
Dave Whitney
was featured, in his best Louis Armstrong manner, on Blue Turning
Gray Over You. Mike Hashem, infamous banjo from New
Hampshire, always gets a request for China Boy; relentless,
flashing fingers, (this time with Albie's vibrant tuba in the
background.) Charlie Borneman, up from Florida, was featured on trombone and
vocals on Melancholy Blues.
Scotty had fun with Oh, What a Time I Had With
Minnie The Mermaid (at the bottom of the sea). They filled
a request for St. Louis Blues with a tango beat, Craig
sizzling on clarinet (think Artie Shaw's altissimo C.)
The entire ensemble was driven by Steve Taddeo's
exuberant energetic drumming.
Splendid set!
The professionalism of this band belies the fact they only meet once
a year! We hope to be at their 'jam' next year!! |
