23rd The Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival
July 31-August 2 2009

The Finale  by Ed Orr

The 2009 Great CT Traditional Jazz Festival came to a close on Sunday afternoon after what appeared to be a immensely successful transition to the Mountain Ridge Resort in Wallingford. The finale was hosted by the always effervescent Jeff Barnhart who performed the Maple Leaf Rag following a recitation of applicable lyrics for the piece by Igor Glenn.

The first group joining virtuoso banjoist Bob Price included drummer Danny Coots, clarinetist Craig Ball, tubaist Art Hovey, trombonist Charlie Bornemann, reedman Nate Ketner, guitarist Bob Leary and pianist Ted DesPlantes.

Three members of the Sugarfoot Youth Band demonstrated their considerable musical talent when they joined the others on stage. They included Molly Sayles on drums, Judie Blum and Emily Selzer on reeds.

Emma Sayles (another Sugarfoot member) joined Dave Ruffner, Paul Midiri, and Jim Fryer to present a very fine trombone quartet version of “Joe Avery’s Piece.” Blue Street’s Jason Jurzak and David Hull joined in on tuba and piano.

We next heard an exciting “Alabama Jubilee” performed on banjo and guitar strings by Bob Price, Matt Bottel, Pat Mercuri and Bob Leary (vocalizing as well). Contributing to the excitement were drummer Bob Bequillard and pianist David Hull.

The horns were next to hold forth. Fred Vigorito, Forrest Helmick, Dan Tobias and Sugarfooter Liz Dietz comprised the front line and were backed by honoree Albie Bernard and Sugarfoot pianist Robert Young.

Several other musicians joined in the festivities including Jim Lawler (drums) and Danny Selzer (tuba with Sugarfoot). Many musicians returned to the well populated stage to partake in the closing numbers. As many as could fit on the stage assembled for the “second line” finale.

Host Jeff Barnhart asked for audience reaction to the new venue. We hope the positive reaction expressed by those present will have bearing on the choice of this venue in the coming years.
