Finale - with Jeff Barnhart

at The 22nd Annual Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival
July 25-27, 2008

Next Jeff called upon anyone with a string instrument - banjos, guitars.    Matt Bottel of Blue Street, Bob Leary of the All Stars, Pat Mercuri of Midiri Bros, Mike Hashem from the Festival Band.

Kind, gentle-men all, careful not to hurt anybody's feelings, couldn't pick a song, prompting Jeff to go ballistic. They finally settled on a  ferocious Alabama Jubilee.  That tune is wild for a single banjo, with four banjos it was a cyclone!

Then they quietly left the stage.

The Great Tuba-off: (?)  "Heavy metal ensemble with the tuba virtuosi." Jason Jurcak, Al Bernard, Greg McCurty, Art Hovey, backed by Ted drums and Bob Leary banjo. The first question Jason asked was "Anybody know how to lead a band?  Being the youngest and quickest, he lead them into Shine.

There was some rough ensemble until they figured out who had the melody,    and they blew   away everybody's' bluesies.  "What thunder?  I don't hear any thunder - those were tubas."

Trumpet event. Duel to the death!

Dan Tobias, of Midiri Bros., Freddy Vigorito of Galvanized, young CJ Tomasevich of Sugarfoot, Forrest Helmick of Cornet Chop Suey, backed by Jurcak tuba, Leary guitar, Coots drum, Jeff piano.

Joe Avery's Piece; brass competent, commanding, CJ holding his own with the pros.  There's still hope for our kind of music!  Thank you Art Hovey!
