Galvanized Jazz Band at TGCTJF '08

with Jane Campedelli vocals & Bob Price, banjo and special guest JP Alessi, France
at The 22nd Annual Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival
July 25-27, 2008

Fred vigorito Leader/cornet, Bill Sinclair on piano, Art Hovey tuba/string bass, Bob Bequillard drums, Paul Boehmke clarinet, Roy Rubinstein trombone, Bob Price banjo, Jane Campedelli vocals, and special guest JP Alessi saxophone.

This band is even older than the Black Eagles, starting at Yale University in 1965 (with a bit of help from Eli Newberger.)  For over 31 years they played somewhere in Connecticut every Sunday, and can still be heard at Marissa's in Trumbull, Connecticut (see below). The band doesn't have a regular trombone player, so they rotate guests, bringing an original feel to the band every time they play.

There were several guests at TGCTJF 2008, with Jane Campedelli and Bob Price returning from Florida for the occasion. Roy Rubinstein was on trombone. Filling in for Russ Whitman on reeds were Paul Boehmke clarinet/sax and special guest JP Alessi from France on saxophone (thanks to GJB fans who pooled their resources to get him here).  Freddy was reciprocating, as he travels to France every year to play with his band.  This band played 7 times over Friday and Saturday, and we managed to catch a couple of them.

Janie began with a tune that Fred had heard for the first time in 1963 at Bill Bissonette's house, I'm Confessing That I Love You.

She met the Galvanized Jazz Band in the 70's and they became friends and family.  She's been in Florida since 1986, but we bring her back to New England every once in a while, which was the theme for her next tune, That's My Home. We miss you too, Jane!

She still has a great knack for scatting, and proved it with the 1936 When My Dream Boat Comes Home.

The driving force behind the front line, Freddy uses his metal top hat mute on the 1944 Kid Valentine's Algiers Strut
JP's full-bodied tenor sax was explosive  playing Dark Town Strutters' Ball.

Between songs, Janie sits next to Bill Sinclair.
Bill introduced the 1948 Anytime, taking the first chorus, then letting in....

.... the dynamic saxophone duo, solidly backed by Hovey on string bass and Bequillard on drums.

Originally from Bill Bissonette's Easy Rider Jazz Band, reed wizard Paul Boehmke won over the crowd with his superb clarinet on High Society.  The audience insisted he play his infamous Over The Waves.  Beginning in waltz time for a couple of choruses, he then erupted into Dixieland, flying high on clarinet with JP darting in and out around him.

Roy Rubenstein, formerly of the Chicago Hot 6, added spark outlining the chords and improvising counter melodies to the band's free-wheeling performances.

Bob Price, The Banjo Crackerjack, now settled in Port Charlotte, Florida gave a  breakneck-speed demonstration of variations on a single string banjo with the 1938 Jealousy.

Art Hovey tuba, acoustic string bass, and Bob Bequillard drums, are the foundation of the band; solid bedrock that keeps gives the front line confidence and freedom to create and improvise.

Fortunately for us back east, The Galvanized Jazz Band can be heard once a month on Sundays, starting October 26th at Marisa's in Trumbull CT with another evening of jazz and good food. Guest trombonist will be Ben Griffin from the Coast Guard Dixieland Band, and Sherman Kahn on clarinet and saxophone. They play from 6 to 8:30 PM, with just one break.  They will also be there on Sunday, November 9 and back again in January 2009. There is no cover or minimum; you can enjoy a fine Italian dinner while listening to the music, and there is a dance floor right in front of the band.
