NY: Mary Lou Williams Centennial
at
Rose Theater, JALC details Come celebrate the centennial of the First Lady of Jazz: pianist
and composer Mary Lou Williams. From her early breakthrough works as an arranger of the swing era with Andy Kirk, to her ambitious
extended works like the classic Zodiac Suite, Mary Lou's music was profound and beautiful as it was hip and swinging. It takes more
than one piano player to honor this great artist's legacy. Two modern interpreters, Geri Allen and Geoffrey Keezer, will be joining the
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis for the celebration |

Jeff Hughes'
Jazz Jesters Novelty Band with vocalist Ginny Briggs at the Sherborn Inn, 33 N. Main St. Sherborn
MA (508) 655-9521 $10 admission. Fans of Ray Smith's Paramount Jazz Band are sure to enjoy the Jazz Jesters! JJNO has Jeff Hughes (cornet) and Jimmy Mazzy (banjo & vocals)
from the ol' PJB, plus the dynamic reed duo of John Clark and Craig Ball, and rhythm stalwarts Ross Petot (piano), Albie Bernard (tuba) and Bill Reynolds (drums), doing some swell
tunes from the heart of the Jazz Decade. Many of their sources are actual arrangements from the '20s, and they augment these with improvised takes on other pieces of the era.
The bandsmen here have long association with and love of the hot jazz style that defined the birth of jazz. Their sound is reminiscent of that fine band Ray put together 25 years ago,
but with its own excitement and personality. In addition, JJNO features delightful
chanteuse Ginny Briggs, who specializes in the unique repertoire of classic '20s singer Jane Green. This night will be sweet & hot!

.McBride introduces King of Brown - a 10-track album featuring his new acoustic jazz quintet Inside Straight, comprised of old friends, pianist Eric Reed, alto saxophonist Steve Wilson and drummer Carl Allen, as well as newcomer vibraphonist Warren Wolf, one of McBride’s former students.
Produced by McBride, Kind Of Brown is a collection of hard swing-to-bluesy groove tunes that the leader says he put together to give the members of his new ensemble “something to sink their teeth into.” He adds, “I wanted to present solid melodies with some decent chord changes that could be good vehicles for the guys to blow on.” |
