Restoration
In the summer of 1997 the State of Delaware began an extensive restoration project on the Fenwick Island Lighthouse. First the entire lighthouse was surrounded by twelve levels of scaffolding.
Next, the lighthouse was completely wrapped in white sheeting before the sand blasting began to remove the white paint began.
In 1998, the last week of January the weather turned nasty when a pair of nor'easters, seven days apart, moved up the Atlantic Coast. The winds were so strong the sheeting was torn away from the scaffolding exposing the lighthouse. Eventually the weather returned to normal, and the sheeting was repaired.
