Welcome to the fan page for The NFL Reading Kit. When I was a kid, I discovered the NFL Reading Kit in one of my classrooms. The kit contained 50 placards with stories relating to football. On the front of the placards were tales of great players, narratives of great games and accounts of football records. Flip any placard over and there was a comprehension test for what you just read. The kit contained scorecards for students as well as a Teacher's Guide to make sure the students’ answers were correct. I found a complete NFL Reading kit a couple of years ago at a local thrift store. When I saw it I immediately recognized what it was, but soon realized this wasn't the kit from my childhood. The kit I found (and purchased) was printed in 1987, the year I graduated from high school. The kit I feel in love with was made in 1977 and contained some of the same placards as the 1987 version held. A few changes had been made, though. The number of cards was reduced from fifty (50) to forty (40). Newer players like Dan Marino and Marcus Allen were added and stars of the 1970s like Jack Lambert and Terry Metcalf were removed. I tried to do some research on the Sports Reading Series from Education Insight. Not much is written out there about the kits, but I did find some information on e-bay. It appears that E.I. also produced Reading Kits for baseball, basketball and the Olympics. I don't know why I've connected so much with the memory of the NFL Reading Kit. Obviously, it came from a simpler time in my life as well as our country’s. Possibly, it was the discovery of the Reading Kit that fueled my love of books to this day. Whatever the reason, I played around with the idea of this website so anyone can read them. Maybe you even have a young child who is interested in football and its history. For that reason, I included the comprehension tests as well as an answer sheet. Since I am not an attorney, I hope I am not infringing on anyone's rights. This site is truly in appreciation to Educational Insights and the NFL for giving me and other young boys the fuel to help them to read. Links to their respective websites are to the right. If you're a visitor to the site, I would love to hear from you especially if you have a found memory of the NFL Reading Kit. Happy Reading! -Colin Click here to start reading the football story! |
