NFL 2005 Raw Data

Week 9

The data provided on this page tries to utilize raw data available from a free major NFL stats provider.  I tried to look at the raw data before interjecting manual corrections obvious errors in the power rankings.  I am still trying to figure out how to add factors such as injuries and weather into the power rankings.  There is still a number of statistical problems with how the data is manipulated (I am not a statistician), and this is really a first attempt at handicapping NFL games based on using previous weeks stats.  While previous years trends and outside influences may also affect power rankings, I tried to use the previous weeks results/data as the main factor in developing a power ranking system.  It is unlikely that the results generated on this spreadsheet are reliable indicators in predicting a future game outcome, but what the heck - let's give it a try.......I tried to develop this system to look at the possibilities of beating a spread.  Spreads are not predictors of how the game will turn out, since all the bookmakers want is an even distribution of the money wagered.  If the spread, or line, changes, it is a usually a reflection of how people are betting the game (or if a major factor that influences the game (such as injury) occurs).  The result of NFL games are dependent on a variety of factors that are not likely reflected in pure statistical data., and successfully betting on NFL games is reflected in winning over 54% of your bets.  Making predictions is one thing, and putting your cold hard money down is another, and I decided to determine the success of this system on the actual bets I place (see home page for results).

Please refer to previous weeks for more detail on how the charts are compiled.  From this point on I will only post Power Charts, Score Charts and rank comparison charts for your reference

I may be willing to sell the data on this page in  the raw excel data.  If you would like to purchase this spreadsheet (nflstats.xls in Microsoft Excel 2000 format)) to use and evaluate, please email the Author at nflstats@comcast.net for details, and perhaps we can work something out.  Once Again, this is the first iteration of this spreadsheet, and there are many statistical problems here to be worked out.  Since I am involved in a number of other projects as well, I may not answer your email requests right away, or may abandon this project entirely.......However, you can see what was started, and how you can create your own power ranking system as well using excel.

This is a relatively simple excel spreadsheet. You should be proficient in excel and know how to import data from outside sources (like yahoo! sports), by cutting and pasting the data to the spreadsheet.   Since this spreadsheet is always evolving, I could send you weekly updates for the season (up to week 16)  to what I am doing if you are willing to buy, and am comfortable with working with you.  The pictures above are the actual spreadsheet cut into sections for viewing.  Email suggestions to the Author as well.......

I am sorry that I  cannot provide details on how to cut and paste the data from outside sources and how I decided to use the formulas.  However, the formulas are there and you are free to change the formulas to your own preferences.

There are some manual functions involved in using the spreadsheet, such as manually placing the games in the match up columns.  However, the data is manipulated by sorting the data into alphabetical form, then resorting it to power ranking forms.  There is also a graph of the teams rakings so you can tweak the power ranking numbers and watch how the ranking are affected.
