The President of the United States has signed (10/13/06) the Safe Accountability For Every Port (SAFE) Act of 2006 (H.R. 4954), a House-originated spending bill that mainly concerns itself with maritime, port cargo and related Department of Homeland Security (DHS) anti-terrorism measures, that includes the outlawing of Internet gambling - reportedly strongly advocated by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) and Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.). They initially had tried to attach the proviso in a bill authorizing funding for U.S. military forces.

"The enforcement provision provided by this bill will go a long way to stop these illegal online operations," Kyl said about the anti-gambling action, which essentially revises U.S. criminal codes under the Wire Act of 1961 by prohibiting all forms of electronic payments and credit transactions for Internet wagering. As a result, such gamblers can't use and online gambling houses can't accept credit cards, checks and electronic fund transfers to handle wager transactions. The act also requires the U.S. Department of the Treasury to issue regulations requiring financial institutions to block transactions in connection with Internet gaming within nine months.

It now looks like the Vegas lobbies and organized crime (via your local bookies) have won this battle to restrict and ban safe internet wagering.  It is now evident that Net-Teller and Firepay will not allow US customers to deposit funds and many online agencies (such as BET365) are in the process of terminating  U.S. accounts..  Currently many responsible online agents are trying to fight or amend this legislation, however it may be too late. The tactics of this administration to pass this bill reflects the underhanded and despicable nature of the operations of the extreme right wing of the Republican party in the United States. Anything the Republican Right wants is shadowed under the term "terrorism."   It seems that the government feels its citizens are a major risk to its security by playing online poker, while it wallows in the disaster that is Iraq.  I guess your playing poker on line has also contributed to North Korea and Iran being free to build and sell nuclear weapons as well. 

The ultimate result of this action by the United States Government is that many poker rooms are banning US poker players from their sites and internet sportsbooks may be next.  Other sites are defiant.

Interpoker.com, BET365.com, Celebpoker.com, PacificPoker.com, Titan Poker.com have begun closing US player accounts.   Thank the Republican Right wing for denying Americans the right to play poker online with the rest of the international community while attaching hypocritcal provisions in this act to allow horse racing and casinos in their own states. Your online sportsbook may be ready to cut you off as well, so find out.

 ENOUGH is ENOUGH. If you feel that your representative is responsible for the passing of this act, do what you can to voice your opinion. While your duly elected representatives will likely distance themselves from actually supporting online gambling, it is evident that the hypocritical and right wing nature of the current administration needs to be balanced.
