Wednesday, February 9th 6:30 PM King's Books Watch two psychological experiments that reveal man's inhumanity to man. Stanley Milgram, whose Jewish parents escaped Germany, wanted to study why a "Good German" would commit war crimes. (Milgrim's biography is titled "The Man Who Shocked the World"). We'll watch unsuspecting volunteers in the late 1950s, first college students from Yale - then the good citizens of New Haven, Connecticut - obey the authority figure in the lab coat and give electric shocks (simulated) to the person they think is another volunteer in the experiment. Of course, no one was really hurt - but it shows that many will obey any order, even if they suspect it will harm another. (Note - one of the opening sequences of GhostBusters is a parody of these experiments). After a discussion, we'll watch another experiment, this time at Stanford in the 1970s - where Philip Zimbardo wanted to show the effects of imprisonment. He selected 18 student volunteers, 9 to be prisoners and the other 9 to be the guards. The study was to run for two weeks in a simulated prison in the basement of the psychology building on campus. Although instructed not to harm the prisoners, the guards quickly went out of control and started abusing the prisoners in several ways - physically and mentally. The experiment ended after four days without physical harm, but some interesting discussions ensued between the student prisoners and guards afterwards. The parallels to Abu Graib are striking, including stacks of naked prisoners. It was so striking that Dr. Zimbardo was contacted by CNN within days of the release of the Abu Graib pictures for comment. He then was asked to testify in defense of the actions of one of the military guards. His book, The Lucifer Effect, not only records a complete record of the experiment, but proceeds to examine Abu Graib and spells out the actions of the guard he defended and also the responsible officers - and then he goes on to examine the responsibility of those in the Bush Administration. He even goes further to discuss how we all live our lives in the expectations of the roles we adopt in our lives. A German Film "Das Experiment" is a recreation of the experiment. This movie is part of a movie
series sponsored by
Veteran's for Peace #134 (Tacoma). The event is free of charge,
and open to the general public.

To deprive it of oxygen. To shame it. To mock it. With our art, our music, our literature, our stubbornness, our joy, our brilliance, our sheer relentlessness– and our ability to tell our own stories. Stories that are different from the ones we’re being brainwashed to believe. The corporate revolution will collapse if we refuse to buy what they’re selling– their ideas, their version of history, their wars, their weapons, their notion of inevitability. Remember this: We be many and they be few. They need us more than we need them. Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing. -Arundhati Roy |
