Taken some time before 1875 in Thisted, Denmark.

Possibly before or near her marriage - note earrings and different hairdo.

Grandma and Grandpa (Nicolai and Magdalene, Ed.) Hesseldahl were extremely pious and God-fearing people. I can remember Grandpa standing up in church testifying to God's goodness, and their general feeling conveyed to all that God would take care of them when life was difficult.

One time Aunt Mary remembered that times were so hard there was no flour or sugar in the house. These were necessary staples that were a must in every household, and they had nothing that could substitute for them.

Aunt Mary said something to her mother about this lack and wondered what they would do, since there was no money. Grandma said, "Don't worry, God will provide what we need."

I can imagine Aunt Mary wondering how on earth God could take care of this problem, but he did.

Grandma, despite her busy days as a housewife and mother and farm-chore worker was a very fine seamstress and often did sewing for women in their neighborhood.

In my imagination I can hear a knock at their door. And I can see the neighbor woman who came in, material in hand, asking if Grandma would sew her a wedding dress. Grandma said she would, and the woman brought in a sack of flour and one of sugar in payment for the labor.

"God moves in a mysterious way his wonders to perform."
