Easier Said Than Done
Kingston Phillips is a savvy entertainment executive who is still reeling from her first major signing to MMG’s new urban music label. Sharing her success with her two best friends, Keela and Essence, her float on cloud nine is cut short by a late night phone call.
Kingston rushes back to Jamaica to bury her Mama Grace but not before finding out that her boyfriend, Randy, is a lying cheatin’ poster child for her ‘men ain’t shit’ campaign. Being back on the beautiful island, Kingston is surrounded by family secrets, jealousy and greed, things commonly associated with the death of the family matriarch. What she doesn’t expect and finds even harder to digest is the reunion with her first love, Damon.
As if Kingston doesn’t already have enough to deal with, the reading of her grandmother’s will makes her the executor of a very large estate—one that she must move back to Jamaica to run. Her cousin is all for the move as well as Damon, but Kingston is having a much harder time figuring this one out.
With a realistic tone and skillfully written characters, Ms. Woods has given us a glimpse into one woman’s life. She’s taken us through her ups, her downs and her triumph in the end. Although it took a moment to set the stage, this novel encompasses a wealth of emotions. Kingston’s dreams being the most moving. What was remarkably different about this relationship novel was that it was a complete story. Kingston’s issues from childhood through adulthood were addressed and resolved in a clear, realistic manner. This was an enjoyable read and I am anxiously awaiting Ms. Woods’ next literary contribution.
