A Heartbeat Away
Samille Broussard is a diversion investigator with the DEA. Headstrong and ambitious, she sets her sights on working in the FBI's lab, It's the break that she has been waiting for and is determined to prove that she is up to the task.
Brant Kincaid is the FBI's "super agent" with a secret in his past that propels him to overachieve. Brant and Samille are thrown together to investigate the connection between a mysterious drug and ten high profile teenagers in comas. Samille is determined to prove that she can do the job and Brant is not so convinced because she is after all just a rookie. Despite the fact that the FBI and DEA are separate government agencies and do not perform the same tasks, Brant and Samille are able to carve out a good working relationship and in the midst discover a growing attraction that is undeniable.
Ms. Smith creates an interesting suspense that only gets better as you turn the pages. In this novel, she provides a lot of detail explaining the job of a diversion investigator while still creating an intense investigation for the reader to become absorbed and attempt to work through. With a strong voice this author introduces an array of stand alone characters whose presence in presented in a clear and purposeful way. I as the reviewer felt that the romance, was slow to develop, but when it arrived, it left you with a feel of sentimentality, which only added to the ending which was nicely gift-wrapped.
