Kyle Coughlin has both a Doctor
of Musical Arts degree and a Master of Music degree in clarinet performance
from the Peabody Conservatory of Music, as a student of Loren Kitt. Besides
teaching clarinet, saxophone, music fundamentals, and jazz ensemble at
Howard Community College, he is also on the faculties of the University
of Maryland Baltimore County and the Friends School of Baltimore.
As a recitalist, Dr. Coughlin has performed extensively throughout the Baltimore-Washington area. He is a member of the New Horizons Chamber Ensemble, is an active free-lance musician, and has performed with Concert Artists of Baltimore, the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, and orchestras at the Lyric Opera House, the Mechanic Theater, Merriweather Post Pavilion, Arena Stage, and Wolftrap. In May 1994, he performed in Evian, France, with the Peabody Camerata, under the direction of Mstislav Rostropovich. His honors include first prize in the Professional Division of the Baltimore Music Club Competition in 1992 and finalist in the Buffet North American Clarinet Competition in 1995 and 1996. Dr. Coughlin's interests extend beyond classical music -- as lead alto saxophonist in the Maryland Jazz Ensemble for four years, he was one of the group's featured soloists in concerts with jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie and Stanley Turrentine. He is presently the leader of the HCC Faculty Jazz Quartet and is a member of The Todd Butler Group, recently voted top jazz band in Baltimore by Music Monthly magazine. |
