By the age of thirteen, violinist
Sheng-Tsung Wang had already given his highly acclaimed solo debut performing
with the Bremen Symphony Orchestra of Germany. Of the concert Die Nord
Deutsche marveled that Mr. Wang "performed the difficult passages with
astonishing understanding, as well as interpreting the lyric qualities
with sweetness, bravura, and inspired tone." Mr. Wang is the recipient
of many awards and honors. Most recently, he was selected to be the resident
violinist of the 1999 La Gesse Music Festival in France and Italy. In addition
to being awarded the Ruth Blaustein Merit Scholarship, Sheng-Tsung Wang
captured top prize in Peabody Conservatory's 1997 Marbury Violin Competition.
While at the Conservatory, Mr. Wang held the position of concertmaster
for both the Peabody Symphony and Concert Orchestras. He appeared in that
capacity with the Peabody Symphony when it made its New York City debut
to a standing ovation in Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall. In addition,
Mr. Wang served for four years as concertmaster of the Maryland All State
Orchestras, as well as the 1993 All Eastern Honors Orchestra. In
1992, he received the Maryland Distinguished Scholar Award, and performed
for Governor William Donald Schaefer at the awards ceremony.
As a founding member of the Gemini Piano Trio, Sheng-Tsung Wang has concertized extensively in the United States. In addition to its performance on National Public Radio, the trio was featured at La Jolla Chamber Music Society's SummerFest '98. Working with esteemed artists such as Cecile Licad, Cho-Liang Lin, Ida Kavafian, and Menahem Pressler, the trio presented a successful concert of which The San Diego Union-Tribune hailed them as "mind readers, anticipating each other's every move" while applauding their "almost uncanny musical closeness." Praised for their "amazing virtuosity" by Music Monthly, the trio has earned top prizes in the prestigious Chamber Music Yellow Springs National Competition, the MTNA Chamber Music Competition, and the Baltimore Chamber Music Awards Competition. The trio also performed guest engagements at Princeton University, Penn State University, University of Maryland College Park, and the Johns Hopkins University. A recent CD release on the AW label features trios by Ives and Brahms. Sheng-Tsung Wang has collaborated frequently with artists in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area, including Earl Carlyss, former violinist of the Juilliard String Quartet, Thomas Kraines of the Peabody Trio, and Stephen Kates, professor of cello at the Peabody Conservatory. He has been heard most recently in performances at the Austrian Embassy, the Kennedy Center, as concertmaster of the North American Youth Elite Orchestra, the Taiwanese Consulate, Virginia's "Monticello", and the French Embassy. Mr. Wang made his Carnegie Hall debut this past December under the auspices of the La Gesse Foundation. Mr. Wang received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where he was a student of Victor Danchenko. Previous teachers have included Elaine Mishkind, Eugene Drucker of the Emerson String Quartet, the late Mark Ulrich, and Ik-Hwan Bae. Other important teachers have included Charles Castleman, Heifetz-pupil Beverly Somach, and Eric Rosenblith, chair of strings at the New England Conservatory. Mr. Wang currently holds teaching positions at Howard Community College and the Peabody Conservatory, Preparatory Division. |
