| The Friends
of the Howard Community College (HCC) Music Department project was founded
by Bill Herbert to promote the college's wonderful music program, its students
and its faculty, and to better inform the Howard County, Maryland community
(especially, Columbia) about music department events. The talented and
nurturing music faculty members at HCC create an environment that stimulates
their students to flourish. The teachers are active and skilled performers,
themselves. This environment attracts associations with other excellent
performers and local performing groups and it creates a synergism with
the students and faculty of the surrounding public high schools. The result
is exciting music at events that are mostly free to the public.
There are two components of the
Friends project:
-
a mailing list for email event reminders
with a web calendar,
-
this site, a site of list promotional
pages featuring music department fan information.
The mailing list and calendar are hosted
by Yahoo.com where the group is called "hcc-music" and subscription is
free of charge. For those who are not already Yahoo!Groups subscribers,
the subscription process involves both subscribing to Yahoo!Groups and
joining the hcc-music list. A Yahoo!Groups subscriber has access to many
other interesting and free mailing lists (e.g., Columbia
Concert Band Mailing List), in addition to hcc-music. Yahoo!Groups
is a solid service provider and is continually improving.
Its privacy policy and its sensitivity to appropriate advertising
is good. Please be patient if you encounter any trouble and contact the
group manager if you
have difficulty resolving it.
The hcc-music group is configured as an announcement group
in which only the manager and a few music faculty members are permitted
to post messages. The group is configured to conceal subscribers' identities
and to squelch spam email. The calendar feature allows list members to
plan for event attendance during a musical season. The email event reminders
are mailed to all list members at one or two intervals before events, for
attendance planning.
This web site is hosted
in personal web space at OurWorld, the member pages area of Compuserve.
The site presents subscription information for the mailing list.
It also presents music faculty biographies and a department photo album.
This web site has no official connection with the Howard Community
College and its content is the responsibility of its manager(s)
and members. |
