Acquisition of the Great Woods Conservation Area, in Mansfield, started in 1971 with the establishment of the NRT. In 1972 the Great Woods Study Committee was formed by a vote of the Mansfield Town Meeting, its goal was to establish a plan for the best use of the Great Wood area and take action to implement the plan.

Zoning was established which allowed development of part of the eastern portion of the woods (along Route 140). A plan was put into effect to acquire land in the woods for conservation and passive recreation.

Since that time land has been acquired through purchase and gift to the point where we are today.

The woods contain many trails and an abundance of wildlife.

Parking is available at the Oak Street entrance to access the trail system.
