Three cards, each numbered with a counting number, are placed face down next to each other as shown.

Here are the only two things your know:

1) The total of the three cards is 13.

2) The numbers get larger from left to right.

The first person looks at the left-most card, the one labeled X, and announces, “I have no idea what the other two cards are.”

The second person then looks at the right-most card, the one labeled Z, and announces, “I have no idea what the other two cards are.”

The third person now looks at the middle card, the one labeled Y, and announces, “I have no idea what the other two cards are.”
