I started
travelling around the sun in 1929. At that date my parents
were living in Sunbury, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania. A year
later we moved to a new home
they had finished building, beside the captivating stream that flows
through spectacular sylvan beauty in Spruce Hollow,
Point Township, Northumberland Co.
Fast forward: By the time of
my birthday in 2006
I had travelled perhaps 1,000,000 miles on or near the surface of this planet, at
speeds between 1 foot per second up to 650 miles per hour, and had completed 77 trips
around the
sun, at 66,598 miles per hour, for a total of
some 45,722,000,000 miles. It's been quite a ride!

After completing my 60th tour around
the sun, I retired from 31 years of ordained ministry. Since then my major
interests, besides my family, have been uncovering the history
of ancestors and adding to my collection of photographs begun in 1950. Am
presently
engaged in converting about 18,000 film photos into digital photos
and I continue trying to learn more and more about the scores of immigrant
ancestors who came to southeastern Pennsylvania from the Germanic principalities in
the 18th Century.
In February 2006 I erected this index Webpage and then began
to add pages that summarize some twenty years of intensive
research on
the
subject of SULOUFFS AND SULOFFS IN AMERICA. Our
surname, attested in Hessian Army records, was
spelled ZULAUF when it first came into this country in August 1776,
with an occasional alternate spelling, ZULAUFF, found in German
records. The earliest change found for the spelling of the immigrant's surname in America was to
SULOUF, found in a
1783 tax listing for
Robeson Twp., Berks Co. Pennsylvania.
Then over the next 20 years, while the family lived in Pennsylvania's Berks and
York counties, the immigrant's surname saw a
half-dozen variant spellings that retained essentially the same
pronunciation. Finally, after 1803, in
Mifflin>Juniata Co. PA, our
surname settled down to the two spellings that have been steadily
in use by the family for the last 200 years, SULOUFF and SULOFF.
