North Shore & Western Division

Midwest Region, NMRA

Welcome to the North Shore & Western Division!

The National Model Railroad Association offers many tangible and intangible benefits. The most significant intangible benefit is the opportunity to form life-long friendships with people who have similar interests. Tangible benefits include:

  • Division Meetings
  • Clinics
  • Layout Tours
  • Model Contests
  • A Modular Layout
  • A Newsletter (The 400)
  • Prototype Field Trips

Division meetings include clinics, model contests and layout tours. These meetings provide opportunities to get to know other members and to share knowledge about prototypes, modeling techniques, etc. The 400, a newsletter/meeting notice, is published from September to May. The September issue is sent by electronic or regular mail to all members. The other issues are sent to all members who provide e-mail addresses and to other members who subscribe to a printed/mailed copy. For subscription information, please contact the Newsletter Coordinator.

Lake Michigan on the east, Roosevelt Road on the south, the Tri-State Tollway on the west and the Illinois-Wisconsin state line on the north roughly bound the Division's service area. Non-members and visitors from outside the area are welcome at Division activities.

The Division is organized under Bylaws adopted by its members.

Meetings

The Division meets regularly from September to May, frequently on the fourth Sunday of the month. Meetings are held from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm in the Maynard Room of the Glenview Public Library at 1930 Glenview Road, Glenview, Illinois. From time-to-time, meetings are followed by layout tours from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Contest Rules

  1. Anyone can enter a model in a contest.
  2. Models must be entered with the Contest Coordinator before the meeting begins.
  3. An entry can be a kit, kit-bashed or scratch built, but it must be finished and it must have at least two modifications, not including couplers on rolling stock.
  4. All work must be your own.
  5. First place models from prior Division, Region or National model contests are not eligible.
  6. Supplementary information such as plans, photographs, etc. may accompany the model.
  7. Entrants should be able to answer questions regarding construction techniques, etc.
  8. First, second and third place will be decided by popular vote.
  9. The Contest Coordinator will count the ballots.

While models entered in contests must be complete, you can display “Show & Tell” models at any meeting. “Show & Tell” gives you an opportunity to display work-in-progress, which can be an inspiration to others.

Achievement Program

Anyone who wants to have a model judged under the Achievement Program during a meet must contact the Achievement Program Coordinator at least two weeks prior to the meet. This notice is required to ensure that qualified judges are available on the meet date to assess the model. If you want to have your layout or module evaluated for the Golden Spike Award, complete the Application Form and then contact the Achievement Program Coordinator.

Modules

The Division's HO scale modular layout conforms to the Modular Standards and Recommended Practices of the NMRA. The specifications, etc. for the Division’s modules are summarized in a five-page pdf document. For more information, contact the Modular Layout Coordinator.
