The 2nd Annual Conference for
ARDS Survivors, Families and Caregivers

The 2nd Annual Conference for ARDS Survivors, Families and Caregivers was an overwhelming success!  Survivors, family members and health care providers from throughout Washington, and from as far away as Utah, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Texas and California, joined in this informative, inspiring weekend!  Everyone felt a renewed energy--whether it was in their work as a health care professional, or as a survivor or family member wanting to make a difference in the lives of others.  To read more about the conference and view pictures, go to the conference website.

Here is a link to an interesting article that appeared in the November 17, 2003 edition of the Seattle Times.  It's about delirium, formerly known as "ICU Psychosis", something that many of us ARDS patients have experienced while in the ICU.  Click here to read the article.

Steve Yarnall, M.D., Edmonds cardiologist and ARDS survivor, has written a book, "Beyond Medicine", about the role that love, prayer, humor, music, touch and pets play in the recovery from ARDS and other illnesses.

On Tuesday, May 13, 2003, KING 5 Television aired a wonderful piece on Evening Magazine about ARDS and the Northwest ARDS Support Network.  The fact that SARS has been in the headlines everyday opened up an opportunity to introduce the public to ARDS, which few people know about, yet which is more common, and more deadly.  The story will air again several times on KING 5, as well as on Northwest Cable News (which airs in Oregon and Idaho, as well as throughout Washington state).  The story will also air in Spokane, in order to reach a wider Northwest audience.  To view the accompanying online story, click here.

Kudos to Emmy-award winning producer Mimi Gan, who produced a wonderful story, Dr. Ken Steinberg whose knowledge and expertise in the field of ARDS lent authority to the piece, Ann Cope-Sibborn who generously opened up her beautiful home for the shoot, and all the Northwest ARDS Support Network survivors and family members who opened up and shared their stories in order to educate the public about this little known but deadly disease.

Mike Weglin of Tacoma has recently started up a website called ARDS Stories and Support Center.  Survivors and family members can post their stories there as well as fill out information he is compiling for an ARDS database.  You can access it by going to http://anvilmedia.net/assc.

Dr. Ken Steinberg, Dr. Steve Yarnall, Lynn Yarnall, Meg Tapucol-Provo and Tom Provo traveled from Seattle to Salt Lake City in September, 2002 to participate in the first annual ARDS Survivors conference, which was sponsored by Intermountain Health Care.  To read more about the conference and view pictures, click here.

Meg Tapucol-Provo, Tom Provo, Dr. Steve Yarnall and Lynn Yarnall traveled to Chicago in August, 2002 to participate in the March for Miracles sponsored by The ARDS Foundation.  To read more about the fundraiser and view pictures, click here.
