General Errata Inconsistencies
Familial Errata:
People are often referred to as Aunt or Uncle when indeed they are not. This happens in Gwynedd as well. For instance Azim is called Uncle Azim by both Rothana and Richenda, but he's really only Rothana's Great-Uncle. Yet it is acknowledged in the text that Richenda isn't really his niece. His relationship to Richenda is by marriage: He is the Great-Uncle of the husband [Sulen ar-Rafiq (Rothana's brother)] of Richenda's first cousin, Rohays Vastouni (Sofiana's daughter). The following two examples appear to fit this criteria.
In King Kelson's Bride, Araxie calls Jehana, Aunt Jehana. They're actually first cousins by marriage, but Jehana is twenty years older than Araxie.
In King Kelson's Bride (pg. 111) it is written that Cyric's (Von Horthy) maternal Uncle is Bahadur Khan, King of R'Kassi. That implies that Bahadur is the brother of Cyric's mother, Husniyya. According to Rebecca's web site and thus Codex I, Bahadur is Husniyya's first cousin, hence he is Cyric's 1st Cousin Once Removed.
Other familial misstatements.
King Kelson's Bride Prologue (pg. 3) "It was not a state
visit," Mahael answered. "The ostensible purpose was to assist in
preparations for the coming nuptials of one of the Orsal's nieces, who
is also a grandniece of Queen Jehana by marriage."
He is referring to Richelle's scheduled wedding to Brecon Ramsay. Since
Kelson is Sivorn's (Richelle and Araxie's mother) grandnephew, it's easy
to see how he would think the reverse would be true. Kelson is Sivorn's
grandnephew because his father Brion is Sivorn's nephew. Sivorn married
Donal Blaine's half-brother Richard Bearand Haldane (Duke Richard) who
was 25 years younger than Donal Blaine. So Richelle and Araxie are Jehana's
first cousins.
In The Quest for Saint Camber (pg. 91 in paper) it is stated that Sidana is Dhugal's 2nd Cousin. She's his 1st Cousin Once Removed.
The King's Justice (pg. 257 paper) When Morgan is fussing over
Richenda's impending childbirth: "Dearest heart, I've done it twice before--"
she protested. (meaning Brendan and Briony)
On Rebecca's site (hence Codex I) a second child by Bran Coris is listed
who died at the age of 1 year. Ysabeau Rhiannon Coris.
King Kelson's Bride (pg. 20) Araxie refers to Kelson as a distant cousin. They're 1st Cousins Once Removed. Not very distant to my way of thinking. 1st Cousin Once Removed is the second degree of distance in cousinship.
The Bishop's Heir has the big familial blunder--for an alternative
explanation see the
McLain Problem
In King Kelson's Bride Meraude notes that the Ramsays are in no way related to her family. This appears to be true. However she fails to acknowledge that they Ramsays are related to her husband. Jolyon Ramsay is Nigel's 2nd Cousin Once Removed. (One would hope she discovered that when she sat down at Father Nivard's desk. Smile)
In The Bishop's Heir, Rasoul's last name is spelled ibn Tarik. In King Kelson's Bride it's spelled Ibn Tariq.
In King Kelson's Bride (pg 209) [occurs in the Camberian Council
chambers] "He's marrying his cousin Araxie Haldane," Arilan replied, to
varying expressions of surprise from the four who had not known.
Laran is away attending Vivienne who is mortally ill, so that leaves
only Sofiana, Barrett and Sion who didn't know about Kelson's choice of
a bride, since Azim and Arilan both knew. So, the statement should
read: ...to varying expressions of surprise from the three who had
not known.
King Kelson's Bride appendix: The listing for Seandry, Uncle--Briany de Morgan's pet name for Sean, Lord Derry. Should read Briony de Morgan.
King Kelson's Bride (page unknown) When the author recounts the day Rasoul rode into Kelson's hall with the cheetah, she says the cheetah rode on the horse's crupper (rump). The cheetah was draped around Rasoul's shoulders.
The Quest for Saint Camber (pg. 153 in paper)
"Bishop McLain knows about it now, but he was not the one who told
me. Nor was he the instrument of his own salvation when he was ordained
more than twenty years ago." Should read twelve years
ago.
The King's Justice (pg. 310 in paper)
Talacara should be St. Brigid's (which is in Cuilteine)
vPrologue
of The King's Justice (pg. xix paper) Sofiana is speaking:
"For that matter, Wencit of Torenth, for all his villiany, apparently discovered
a way to place similar powers upon supposed humans--witness Bran Coris.
The late Duke Lionel and his brother Mahael also seem to have received
this benison."
In conjunction with this statement by Tiercel de Claron from High
Deryni (pg. 302 paper) "Not only has Wencit impugned the dignity of
the Council by daring to present a false arbitration offer, but there are
two full humans on Wencit's side, whose powers are only assumed.
They haven't a drop of Deryni blood."
Here's the problem: The two 'full humans' Tiercel mentions are Bran Coris and Duke Lionel (of Arjenol). Rhydon was a former member of the Camberian Council, so we know he was Deryni--as was Wencit of Torenth. Lionel and Mahael are half-brothers--having a father in common, Mahael Averil Oskar Furstan-d'Arjenol. Lionel's mother is Jaine d'Avoine who is the sister of Rosura d'Avoine (Jehana's mother). Mahael's mother is Daniela von Ryndziak.
For Lionel to be full human, then both his parents, Mahael Averil Oskar Furstan-d'Arjenol and Jaine d'Avoine must be human, too. If Jaine d'Avoine is human, then her sister Rosura is also, which makes her daughter, Jehana half-Deryni from her father, Mevric de Besancon. That also means that Liam-Lajos and his siblings (who are Lionel's children) are half-Deryni from their mother Morag Mariah Furstan (Wencit's sister).
Sofiana mentions that Lionel's brother, Mahael also received the benison of having Deryni-like powers placed upon them. Why would Mahael need them if he is already Deryni? I ask that because his full brothers, Teymuraz and Matyas are clearly Deryni--of considerable power. Where does their Deryni blood come from? Their father, Mahael Averil Oskar Furstan-d'Arjenol, who is supposedly human? Or their mother, Daniela von Ryndziak? If only from their mother, then they are half-Deryni, too! Yet Matyas is Sofiana's godson and considered to have greater power than his brothers realize. Or was Mahael's power simply enhanced by this benison given him by Wencit?
If we are to accept that Lionel is full human, then it follows that his father is full human; his half-brothers, Mahael, Teymuraz and Matyas are all half-Deryni. His children, Alroy, Liam-Lajos, Ronal Rurik and Stanisha are all half-Deryni. Jehana is half-Deryni, and Kelson is a quarter-Deryni, if such a thing exists.
I don't think so. I think the whole lot of them except Kelson are full Deryni. Just my opinion, but what good is having your own web site if you can't put forth your own opinions? Makes Tiercel de Claron wrong, but (snort) I can live with that.
vThe King's
Justice Prologue (pg xxiii paper) [this is more of a CC bitch than
an inconsistency]
All of them grew apprehensive at that, for the queen mother was of
the same bloodline that had produced one Lewys ap Norfal--a Deryni of enormous
ability and training who had defied the authority of the Council nearly
a century [72 years] before.
The bloodline that Lewys ap Norfal and Jehana share is her paternal line, de Besancon. For one thing a person has to go back to pre-Camberian times to find the common ancestor. For another, the Council doesn't seem concerned that the following people are also from that same bloodline: Kelson (paternally and maternally), Nigel, Brion, Conall, Rory, Payne, Eirian, Araxie, Richelle, Caitrin, Ithel, Llewell, Sidana, Judhael, Jolyon Ramsay, Brecon Ramsay, Noelie Ramsay and Christolphe Ramsay. Maybe if they had paid a little more attention to Conall and one of their own.... For that matter, Ithel, Llewell and Judhael were nothing if not dangerous. Oh, those de Besancons, you simply cannot trust them.
vThe following
inconsistency is particularly vexing to me because I want it resolved one
way or another:
Deryni Archives (pg. 249 paper) 1112 Denis Arilan,
anticipating Duncan's ordination, has himself transferred to Rhemuth to
fascilitate it./1113 Easter: Duncan is ordained priest at Rhemuth Cathedral,
thanks to secret intervention of Denis Arilan.
However--this is contradicted twice, first in High Deryni then
again in King Kelson's Bride.
High Deryni (pg. 75 paper) Arilan shook his head.
"There was no reason to suspect that Duncan was Deryni. And I should
have risked exposing my own identity, had I tried to read him for any other
purpose."
In the Prologue of King Kelson's Bride, (pg. 7) "--and there
was a second bishop come to his status without Arilan's help--"
Because the above comment in King Kelson's Bride was pointed
out to Katherine Kurtz as being contradictory while the book was in galleys
(I read this on Deryni.net), and she did nothing to change it, I suspect
Katherine means for the statements that support Arilan not helping
Duncan be ordained. It seems that the entries in Deryni Archives
were made somewhat in the heat of the moment because they make sense in
context with the story "The Priesting of Arilan" which appears in that
book.
The Quest for Saint Camber (pg. 93 in paper)
Kelson uses the term 'thirty seconds'. While it's established
that technology in Gwynedd doesn't correspond with our history, there is
no other reference that suggests anyone in Gwynedd has the capability to
tell time that precisely, or that the concept of there being sixty seconds
in a minute has been formed.
The Quest for Saint Camber The distances it takes to ride from one place to another are fairly fluid. When Duncan rides hard from Rhemuth to Valoret to tell Arilan that Tiercel de Claron has been found dead, it takes him three days. Yet when he likewise rides hard from Dhassa to Coroth to tell Morgan about the Kelson and Dhugal's accident, it only take him twenty-four hours. Yet on every map the distances appear to be equal.
