PROJECTS

The first project will be the 1947 Woodson reversing steam engine.

I won't go into any history, just to save space and typing. So as a brief description, the above pictures, left to right the start of my Woodson. Center is the insperation, I saw it online while searching for steam and stirling engines. The left picture is of the first two castings of my engine. And the right is the standard that, at this time has yet to be cast. This page will be a notebook on my progress of each project, so I hope to update often.

I was asked once how do I plan the building of a pattern. This is just part of the process, I start with a sketch made from the drawing. This give me an idea on how to start building. I will follow that with a "to size" layout using a shrink rule that shows all the cores finish and draft. This would done for each complex pattern. Some may think of this as time consuming, but the alternitve may be more so.
These are the pattern completed so far. I still have several patterns to make, then the fun begins. One project lead to another, my flasks aren't big enough, so I need to build some more patterns and get rid of some of the unknown scrap aluminum I have.
Off to a good start, this is the first casting. This is the cylinder with the riser and gate still attached. Notice the shrink in the riser, the idea behind having a riser is have the riser fill the casting with metal as it cools. You want the riser large enough and the contact big enough to allow the metal to be pulled back into the casting. I hope the rest of the castings turn out this good.

This page will take a while to finish. But I'll try to update often.
