This bit of help is for those who are somewhat new to navigating around windows and web sites.

Navigating the genealogy data

When using the frames version (it looks like four frames with a text header box), if you click the browser's 'back' button, the just previously viewed index or data frame will be reloaded.

If you are using a large font, the lower frames may be clipped off. Simply click on the frame border above the index letters (lower left frame) or the button box (lower right frame) and drag it upwards to enlarge it enough to see all you need. You can, in fact, use this technique to change the relative size(s) of any of the frames.

The data loaded into a data or index frame is just one page of many available. You can, however, use the scroll bar in either frame to view a much larger amount of data than is visible at one time.

When working with surname indexes, you may sometimes need to click on the 'next' button it provides to get the next page of indexes. The pages are not separated alphabetically.

Capturing pictures

To capture and save one of the photos simply point at it and click the right mouse button. Almost all browsers will present you with a menu where one of the options is to 'Save image (or picture) as..' Click it and you can save the photo into an image file on your system.

If you are using AOL, you can click the Edit option on its menu bar and click 'Capture Picture'.

Some browsers let you print directly from the screen. Point at the image, left click on it then left click on the FILE menu (usually at the top left of the browser window) then the PRINT (or PRINT PREVIEW) option. Some browsers also support using CTRL/P to print.

Capturing data

The display of the genealogy data allows you to select and copy text from the page. Position your mouse pointer just before the desired text then click and hold the left button down whilst moving the mouse over the desired text. When all you want is selected (highlighted) release the mouse button and click the right mouse button.

You will be presented with a popup menu (like above) with an option to 'Copy'. (The same option is available from the browser's Edit option on its menu bar). Click that and the highlighted text is copied to your computer's 'clipboard'. From there it can be 'pasted' into Notepad or some such application into which you want to place the text.

Notes on Browsers

The programming on this site was designed and tested on most of the commonly used browsers. There are some differences in behavior in order to support certain idiosyncrasies. The best performance is attained using nothing older than Microsoft Internet Explorer v6.
A few requirements:

  • You must have Javascript enabled to use this site.
  • MS Internet Explorer V6.0 was the design target. V7+ works fine. [download]
  • Netscape V9 works well (but is now defunct). [download]
  • Firefox V3+ works well. [download]
  • Opera V9+ seems to work OK. [download]
  • WebTV/MSNTV only supports one display window so the photo display replaces the contents of the browser window instead of displaying photo in same window. Use the 'previous/back' button to return to the previous page.
