A Little Information About US

(Note: This page contains links that connect to sites over which neither the SCA or WeldLake has any control.)

This is a website in perpetual development.  Weldlake is a Canton of the Barony of Northwoods in the region of Pentamere of the Kingdom of Midrealm of the Society of Creative Anachronism better known as the SCA. (The Canton of Weldlake territory encompasses Livingston County in the state of Michigan, USA.) It is of Incipient level.

The SCA is a non-profit educational organization devoted the the study of pre-seventeenth century Western culture. It concentrates on the European Middle Ages and Renaissance, and members work to recreate the arts and skills of this era. Some members study the Middle East and explore the interaction between Europe and Asia during the period under study. The SCA was incorporated in 1968, but recognizes a tournament held in Berkeley, California on May 1, 1966 as its founding date.

An "anachronism" is something that is out of its proper time frame. "Creative Anachronism" takes the best qualities of the Middle Ages and selectively re-creates them in the modern world. Geographically, the SCA covers the globe, with the majority of its members living in the United States or Canada.

In addition to our own events, which include tournaments, feasts, and class sessions on period subjects, we also perform educational demonstrations. For more information on these activities you may visit the Canton Calendar or contact us through the Canton officers' emails. For an online demo of the SCA, click here. For further information on our group, contact our newcomer contact person, our Chatelaine, Lady Aliyah bat Assriel ben Gilead at myauntiem@comcast.net. For more on the SCA in general and the Midrealm in particular, see our Kingdom Chatelaine page at http://www.midrealm.org/chatelaine/.

One of the largest activities our group participates in is providing local support for an SCA demo at the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest in Howell, Michigan, which is hosted each year by the Howell Chamber of Commerce. This demo consists of a medieval village which guests of the Balloonfest may visit throughout the weekend.  While visiting the village, guests have the opportunity to watch, learn, and even participate in activities representative of medieval life.  Please visit our Photo Album for visual examples of what we have done in the past, or our Balloonfest 2007 information page for this past year's activities. For those who are interested in the medieval village, to participate as an SCA member, to provide a demo, or provide other support for the village – you may contact us through the Canton's Balloonfest autocrat.  More information will be posted as it is available for the coming year. (See the vendor info page for current Demo information.)

For more information on the many events available at the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest, you may visit their website: http://www.michiganchallenge.com.
