Fritter - A sweet or savory deep-fried cake. A fritter may incorporate food into the batter or single pieces of food may be dipped in batter.

frit·ter: A small cake made of batter, often containing fruit, vegetables, or fish, sautéed or deep-fried.

Fritter is a generic term that can refer to fried doughs with or without fillings or incorporations. Many of the other ethnic fried doughs on this site would qualify to be called fritters.
