The Appalachian Trail In Connecticut

The AT traverses northwest Connecticut for 53 miles between New York State and Massachusetts. The region contains abundant fresh air, beautiful views and remarkable solitude. It is a wonderful place for a short dayhike or an extended overnight adventure. There is a Connecticut AT map available to help you plan your hike. How To Use This Page * There are two main sections, Hiking North from New York and Hiking South from Massachusetts. Each section covers the entire trail length. * Each main section is divided into 7 smaller hikes by trailhead, thus having 14 total hikes. Hikes 1-7 are northbound. Hikes 8-14 are southbound. * Each of the hikes listed contains information about parking, trailheads, camping or shelters and availibility of water/food/supplies.

This section has specific information for the hiker traveling north from the New York State border to the Massacusetts border. The hike is broken down into seven sections, with parking available at the start and end of each section. Mileages are approximate.

• (1) Hoyt's Road (NY Border) to Bull's Bridge (Kent, CT) - 4 miles

  1. Directions - CT Route 7 to Route 55 West. Continue about 2 miles to parking on south side of Route 55.
  2. Parking - There is a parking lot on the Connecticut side of the state border along Route 55.
  3. Trailhead - The trail is easily visible/accessible from the parking lot.
  4. Camping - Wiley Shelter, 1 mile south (into NY State); Ten Mile Shelter, 3 miles north.
  5. Water -
  6. Food and Supplies - Bull's Bridge Inn, 4 miles north from trailhead, then 1/2 mile east on Bull's Bridge Road, full menu, open for dinner 7 nights. Convenience store next to Inn.

• (2) Bull's Bridge to Route 341 (Kent) - 7 miles

  1. Directions - On Route 7, go 3 miles north from Gaylordsville, or 5 miles south from Kent. At traffic light turn west on Bull's Bridge Rd.
  2. Parking - small lots on either side of Bull's Bridge Road.
  3. Trailhead - located about 1/4 mile west of the bridge. South into the woods; north along Schaghticoke Road for 1/2 mile, then left into woods.
  4. Camping - Ten Mile Shelter, 1 mile south; Schaghticoke Mountain Campsite, 4 miles north; Mt. Algo Shelter, 7 miles north.
  5. Water -
  6. Food and Supplies - Kent Town is 1 mile east of the trail on Route 341, with groceries, restaurants, camping supplies and a post office (06757).

• (3) Route 341 to St. John's Ledges (River Road, Kent) - 5 miles

  1. Directions - Go east 1 mile from intersection of Routes 7/341.
  2. Parking - Limited parking along side of Route 341. The trail crosses 341.
  3. Trailhead - South leads uphill into the woods. North crosses a fence via stairs and heads through fields, then into woods.
  4. Camping - Mt. Algo Shelter, 1/2 mile south; no camping along trail north on this section.
  5. Water -
  6. Food and Supplies - No supplies at end of trail destination. Obtain supplies in Kent prior to day's hike.

• (4) St. John's Ledges to Route 4 (Cornwall Bridge) - 6 miles

  1. Directions - Go east 1/4 mile from the traffic light at Route 7/Route 341 intersection. Turn right on Skiff Mountain Road for 1.1 miles, then bear right on dirt road. It is marked with a sign Appalachian National Scenic Trail. Continue on dirt road to parking areas.
  2. Parking - Park on left at marked lot for trailhead south to St. John's Ledges, or continue to end of road for northbound hiking.
  3. Trailhead - Located at parking areas.
  4. Camping - Stewart Hollow Shelter, 2 miles north; Stony Brook Campsite, 2.5 miles north; Silver Hill Campsite, 5.5 miles north.
  5. Water
  6. Food and Supplies - Gas Station/Convenience Store, hike 1 mile east on Route 4 from where trail crosses the road.

• (5) Route 4 to Route 112/Route 7 Intersection - 12 miles

  1. Directions - Parking at small lot 1/4 mile north of Cornwall Bridge.
  2. Parking - Parking at small lot 1/4 mile north of Cornwall Bridge.
  3. Trailhead - Hike spur trail one mile east to join AT.
  4. Camping - Housatonic Meadows State Park (spur trail east), 1.5 miles north; Ceasar Road Campsite, 2.5 miles north; Pine Swamp Brook Shelter, 5 miles north; Sharon Mountain Campsite, 7.5 miles north; Belter's Campsite, 10.5 miles north.
  5. Water -
  6. Food and Supplies - No dependable supplies at end of this section.

• (6) Routes 112/7 to Route 41 (Salisbury) - 11 miles

  1. Directions - Drive north on Route 7; go 5 miles from Cornwall Bridge to intersection of Routes 7/112.
  2. Parking - North of the intersection, on the east side of Route 7, is a parking area. Parking is available at Housatonic Meadows School also, about 1/2 mile north of this intersection.
  3. Trailhead - Leads north out of parking area on Route 7.
  4. Camping - Limestone Spring Shelter, 6 miles north.
  5. Water -
  6. Food and Supplies - Salisbury Town is about 1/2 mile south of trail as it crosses Route 41 with groceries, post office (06068) and more.

• (7) Route 41 to Sages Ravine (MA Border) - 7 miles

  Note: Sages Ravine, at the end of this hike, is not accessible by road. Jug End Road is 9 another miles north along the trail.
  1. Directions - West on Route 41 in Salisbury, turn north on Route 41 for 1/2 mile.
  2. Parking - There is a small sign indicating a parking lot on the west side of Route 41.
  3. Trailhead - North leads west out of the parking lot.
  4. Camping - Plateau Campsite, 1/4 mile north; Riga Shelter and Campsites, 3.5 miles north; Ball Brook Campsite, 4 miles north; Bond Shelter, 5 miles north; Sages Ravine Campsite, 7 miles north (1 mile north of Massachusetts border)
  5. Water
  6. Food and Supplies - No food/supplies.

This section has specific information for the hiker traveling south from the Massachusetts border to the New York border. The hike is broken down into seven sections, with parking available at the start and end of each section.

• (8) Sages Ravine (MA Border) to Route 41 (Salisbury, CT) - 7 miles

  1. Directions - Accessible only by trail.
  2. Parking - Nearest parking is at Jug End Rd. 9 miles north of Sages Ravine in Massachusetts.
  3. Trailhead - Access is by trail only.
  4. Camping - Sages Ravine Campsite, 1/2 miles north of border; Bond Shelter, 3 miles south; Ball Brook Campsite, 3.5 miles south; Riga Shelter, 4 miles south; Plateau Campsite, 7 miles south.
  5. Water -
  6. Food and Supplies - Salisbury Town is about 1/2 mile south of trail as it crosses Route 41 with groceries, post office (06068) and more.

• (9) Route 41 (Salisbury) to Route 112/Route 7 Intersection - 11 miles

  1. Directions - West on Route 44 in Salisbury, turn north on Route 41 for 1/2 mile.
  2. Parking - There is a small sign indicating a parking lot on the west side of Route 41.
  3. Trailhead - From parking lot go 150 yards south on 44, enter woods on east side of road.
  4. Camping - Limestone Spring Shelter, 4 miles south.
  5. Water -
  6. Food and Supplies - No dependable food or supplies at end of trail here.

• (10) Routes 112/7 to Route 4 (Cornwall Bridge) - 12 miles

  1. Directions - Drive north on Route 7; go 5 miles from Cornwall Bridge to intersection of Routes 7/112.
  2. Parking - North of the intersection, on the east side of Route 7, is a parking area.
  3. Trailhead - Heads into the woods on the west side of Route 7, south of the intersection.
  4. Camping - Belter's Campsite, 1/2 mile south; Sharon Mountain Campsite, 3 miles south; Pine Brook Shelter, 6 miles south; Caesar Road Campsite, 9 miles south; Housatonic State Park (spur trail), 10 miles south.
  5. Water -
  6. Food and Supplies - Convenience store/gas station, hike 1 mile east on Route 4 from where the trail crosses the road.

• (11) Route 4 to St. John's Ledges (River Road, Kent) 6 miles

  1. Directions - Parking on Route 7 at small lot 1/4 north of Cornwall Bridge.
  2. Parking - Parking at small lot 1/4 north of Cornwall Bridge.
  3. Trailhead - Hike spur trail one mile east to join AT.
  4. Camping - Silver Hill Campsite, 1 mile south; Stewart Hollow Brook Shelter, 4 miles south.
  5. Water -
  6. Food and Supplies - No supplies here at all.

• (12) St. John's Ledges to Route 341 (Kent) - 5 miles

  1. Directions - Go east 1/2 mile from the traffic light at Route 7/Route 341 intersection. Turn right on River Road for 2.5 miles, then bear right on unmarked dirt road. Continue for 2 miles to parking area on left, or 3.0 miles to parking area at end of road.
  2. Parking - Park on left at 2.5 miles for trailhead south to St. John's Ledges, or continue to end of road for northbound hiking.
  3. Trailhead - Located at parking areas.
  4. Camping - None on this section.
  5. Water -
  6. Food and Supplies - Kent Town is 1 mile east of the trail on Route 341, with groceries, restaurants, camping supplies and a post office (06757).

• (13) Route 341 to Bull's Bridge (Kent) - 7 miles

  1. Directions - Go east 1 mile from intersection of Routes 7/341.
  2. Parking - Limited parking along side of Route 341. The trail crosses 341.
