club members gathered around banner

This photo was taken at the end of one of our meetings in Fall of 2004. At far left is Fred Mansfield and his wife Sage. Fred is a retired minister, our club chaplain, and blind. Next to Fred is Clark Cooley, our Liontamer and general sparkplug. In the red shirt is John Baerwald, who has been active in Lions for many years. John sits as one of our club's Board of Directors. The redheaded lady is Mary Jane Shannon, PDG, and a bundle of energy. The blond is Brenda Watson, better half to our club weblion, his ears as he used to be her eyes. She was legally blind for years, but has gained a great amount of sight through surgery. She earned her job as a librarian while she was still blind, though.

The hairy mountain hiding behind the banner is Owen Lorion, Brenda's henpecked hubby and the club's treasurer and weblion. He's as deaf as she used to be blind. The glare is coming from the white shirt on Andy Swarthout, another club director and longtime stalwart. Turquoise is a special color to New Mexico, so many New Mexican Lions have turquoise polo shirts with Lions emblems. Our President Vic Lyon, PDG, is modeling one in this photo. It's amazing how Vic and Clark, the size of a couple of chihuahuas, seem to accomplish so much more than all the rest of the club put together. Hovering behind Vic is another half of a set, Mary Jane's significant other and our club's VP, Lee Boyd Montgomery, PDG of a district in Texas!

For many years, the Santa Fe Host Lions Club has sponsored an annual circus, but effective with the 2008 season, the Circus Chimera has announced that it will cease performing except in their home state of California. We have not as yet decided how or if we will replace them.

FLAG PROJECT

The flag program provides a service which shows that businesses and professionals, as citizens, care about our nation. For a nominal sum per year, the Lions will provide a 3'x5' American Flag, standard and holder, installed, and assume all responsibility for the flag and equipment. On each of the National Holidays listed below, a team of Lions members will place the American Flag at the subscriber's place of business early in the morning and remove it before sunset.

Not only is this a patriotic deed, but the funds received from this program are returned to the community through various authorized and supervised needs, such as providing eye glasses to the needy children and senior citizens, support of the New Mexico Eye Bank, Little League, and many other worthwhile needs of the community.

Lions have a long reputation for collecting used eyeglasses for distribution to needy individuals in third-world countries. (Health regulations in all 50 states prevent our distributing them in the US, where our clubs instead help people buy new glasses). Below is a map of where you can help by dropping off any old but usable prescription glasses. We cannot use cases, broken frames, loose lenses, or non-prescription sunglasses.

The Santa Fe Host Lions Club is the oldest active Lions Club in New Mexico, chartered at noon on September 10, 1927. The Taos Lions Club was chartered that same evening, which made them the third Lions Club in the state. The first one, Albuquerque Host, disbanded just a few years ago.

The Santa Fe Host Lions Club is currently home to two Past District Governors of our own District, and one PDG who moved here from a District in Texas!
  • Mary Jane Shannon was DG for 98-99.
  • Vic Lyon, currently club president, was DG for 94-95.
  • Lee Boyd Montgomery was DG of District 2-S5 in southeast Texas for 93-94.

Originally just the Santa Fe Lions Club, we won the added "Host" designation by sponsoring another club.
