Snapshots of Matsubara-cho

Beginning on March 11, 2000, we are including a new project about our neighborhood and our perceptions of it. The self imposed requirements are that it should be mostly photos with very little essay. Three photos will be taken each week, within our Matsubara-cho neighborhood, in the limited time frame of about 30 minutes, hence 3 in 30. We don't want to make this a laborious project. The snapshots should in some way illustrate some facet of Japan or the special qualities of our neighborhood.

These pages are being updated to this new site from where they appeared on the GOL site. They will be back.

The larger picture is of course, that we live in the metropolitan area of Tokyo1, Japan2, in the city of Akishima3, in the neighborhood called Matsubara-cho4. It is sometimes easier to describe to people that we live in Haijima, meaning that we live near the Haijima train station, though there is no place that is officially Haijima. There is, on the other hand, a civic group that calls itself Haijima eki mae chishikai. This means "The civic group in front of Haijima station."
