This is my favorite IDPA competition load. It runs at about 750 fps out of my G35 and performs flawlessly. I believe the secret for such a low MV is the Precision Bullet. |
These black bullets are cast with certified 6/2 lead alloy to which a proprietary dry-lube formula is applied. This process completely encases the precision lead core with such a tough coating that a blow torch will melt the lead out and leave the coating intact! They are less expensive than metal jacketed or coated bullets but cost a little more than lead. I feel much safer shooting the Precision bullets out of my Glocks than I would lead bullets. When I loaded .45ACP's I used lead bullets and by comparison the black bullets are much cleaner to handle reloading and shooting. |
I have developed loads for both IDPA (125k) and IPSC (165k) power factors using the 185 gr Precision bullet and several kinds of powders; WST, Green Dot, and Vit N340. WST is my second favorite IDPA load while the Vit N340 is my favorite IPSC load. My load development RAW data can found here. |

The technique I use to determine the lightest load possible is simply to keep reducing the charge by a tenth of a grain until the gun fails to eject properly. Then I increase the load by a couple of tenths and try shooting weak handed and with a limp wrist to simulate a worse case scenario. |

I could never get the G35 MV's to get close to the 125k PF and still
operate reliably.

The table and chart above depicts the range of charges, from lightest possible to the heaviest necessary to achieve the 165PF for IPSC comps. 2.6 gr failed to eject, the 2.7 gr. load barely passed the weak-hand test so I settled on 2.8 gr. Caution! Light loads with moderate to fast burning powders result in the potential of a double-charge that will not over-flow the case. So, be careful! |
| The .40 is a very unforgiving cartridge, especially in a Glock, when it comes to an over-pressure situation. This potential for a double-charge is one of the main reasons why I like the automatic index feature of the Dillon Square Deal B loading machine. It makes it very difficult - if not impossible, to drop a double-charge. |
I do not suggest hand loads for defense or defense training loads - use factory ammo. |
