Questions asked

“ Coach, can I (as a receiver’s partner) stand in the receiver’s side service box ?”        KK

Tennis Rule #26, Case 5 tells on the position of server’s partner and receiver’s partner in  the service in a doubles game.

“The servers’s partner and receiver’s partner may take any position on their own side of the net, inside or outside of the court. However, if a player is creating a hindrance to the opponent(s), the hindrance rule should be used.”

   So the answer is YES.

Only a server is required to take a position behind the base line between the doubles side line and the extension of the center line.

“ Coach, can I use a string tension meter ?”                     LJ

String tension meter can tell you the exact string tension after stringing. LJ’s racket string tension was 40-45 lbs around the sweet spot. String tension usually goes down 5-10 lbs in a week after stringing, and another 5-10 lbs in a month or so, depending on a kind of strings.

“ Coach, how can I make a kick serve ?”                          BL

Kick serve grip is a single-hand backhand grip. Toss a ball directly above your head or behind your head, and brush a ball from 7 o’clock to 1 o’clock direction, almost straight upward(for a right hander). A ball should kick to the right(for a right hander) after a bounce. Please take a look at an article on various second serves at http://www.tennisserver.com/turbo/turbo_01_08.html  .

“ Coach, Can opponent team use a list of one-point-improvement for weakness of players ?”                                                                        A Branham tennis mom

Opponent team players can find the weakness of our team players anyway in a match. Things in the one-point-improvement are not exactly the weakness of a player. “Weakness” is anything inconsistent in getting points, and “One-point-improvement” is a recommended first thing which a player can try to improve, mostly independent of point making.

For example, Trevor’s slice backhand is not beautiful, but it’s very consistent and it gives opponents tough time to return. He can easily add backhand topspin shots for more variety of shots.

“ Can I play Singles #4 where I can feel more comfortable ?  I don’t feel good on my racket.”                                                                        MT

BVAL by-law does not allow changing players’ ladder position without having challenge matches. The order of  match line-up is strictly determined by the latest ladder. Please read BVAL by-laws.

“Coach, Can I bring in a Boom Box to listen to music?”      SM

Sound is one of key ingredients of information in playing tennis. Sound of opponent’s footwork, opponent’s hitting a ball, Sound of the wind, opponent’s

talking to him/herself, tell you a lot on opponent’s move, quality of strokes.  And opponent’s calling ball’s in or out/scores must be heard clearly.

It’s a good practice only for advanced players to play tennis under a lot of noise

and to keep focusing.

For the SAFETY reason, NO ear-phones are allowed in the tennis court. If you can’t hear “Heads up!!” you may get a hit of a tennis ball in your face/eyes.
