About Paradigm Shifters

Paradigm Shifters, a group meeting monthly on Bainbridge Island, Washington, is loosely associated with the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), sharing their interest in studying consciousness, shifting world consciousness, and in the potential for integration of science and spirituality.

The group owes its existence to a local grandmother* who, at age 84, activated a long-time desire to form such a group.  Her persistence in realizing that dream has become an enormous gift for many of its participants:

Born in March 2005, this group has a roster of over 90 people as of April 2007, with meeting attendance reaching 20-25 over much of the year.  (Smallest attendance 14, largest 27.)  While participants are discovering an extremely wide range of interests within the group, a strong sense of common ground and commitment is emerging on many important topics.  An incomplete sampling of these interests can be found at the IONS website.  The IONS magazine, “Shift”, inspired the group’s formation.  It is available at some bookstores, or by subscription as part of IONS membership.  The local group has neither a formal membership process nor dues - just participation.

Mildred Howard Smith

19 June 1920 – 2 June 2007

*Millie Smith, the founder of our Paradigm Shifters group, died early Saturday evening, June 2nd, 2007, at the age of 86.  She was at home and with her family, and doing remarkably well until just a day or two before passing on.  Her final weeks were full of positive preparation and wonderfully loving exchanges with her family.

It was Millie's desire and drive to start an IONS Community Group that led to our first meeting on 26 March 2005.  That's also the day we named it Paradigm Shifters.

So often important new births occur very close in time to someone's passing, and I can't help but feel that our new interactive web site for active members, first announced just hours before she passed away, is a small but significant example.

Peace and Love to all, and especially to you, Millie … and thanks for the wonderful group!
