A Piece of Wisdom

On the morning of 9/11/2001 I was doing repair work on a boat at Winslow Wharf when I started hearing upset people talking about the planes crashing into the World Trade Center and Pentagon. (I live on a boat anchored out and don't have a radio.)  Some of the people living on boats in the marina who had gone to work came home early (mid-morning) because the news was so troubling on their minds they couldn't concentrate on their jobs.  But I feel this way every day.

It seems to take spectacular events to get people's attention.  Many don't seem to see what I saw instantly when I started first grade after coming from a pioneer-like start, that this culture is geared to frivolous fashion.  This human-centered extravagance requires a terrorist attack against nature every day to keep the show rolling.  Resource use keeps expanding beyond basic needs because there is a market.  It is our choice, the consumers!

We can slow the train by examining the driving motive.  Most of the material accessories to be 'needed' are only to conform to the show.  Basic hands-on connections with nature build the self-confidence to be free of peer pressure and 'just say no' to the show.

I had the advantage of gaining quiet contentment from the purposeful activity of keeping my mother supplied with stove wood and buckets of water and helping tend the garden. From my father I gained a feel for hand tools and a sense of communication with the material being worked.

I believe that community wells to carry water from, and community gardens, would go a long way toward building a society of care and respect for resources and each other.

The definition of altruism is: 'mindful of the wants and needs of others". When a group of people tend a garden together, and share the learning experience, mindful of the plants' wants and needs, their human egos will be set aside because of their focus on the plants' needs.  This experience then will naturally carry over into their way of being in the world.

Baker:

I just saw a marvelous new movie called "One".  Have you heard of it?   A middle aged lawyer from Michigan woke up one morning with an urge to make a movie about oneness and the meaning of life.  He and his wife and some relatives set off to ask a set of questions of people on the street.  The questions They asked can be found on the website for the movie:  www.onethemovie.org  they ended up interviewing many spiritual teachers also like Robert Thurman,  Father Keating, Deepak Chopra, etc.

Sada Ross, Sal Morgan and I went to see the movie in Seattle last night.  The film maker was there and we got to meet him.   Discussion groups are forming in Seattle to discuss the questions.  The Institute of Noetic Sciences is even starting a discussion group in Seattle on the questions.

All the marketing of this movie is by word of mouth.  It is playing in Seattle for a limited time (through Jan 19th I think).  Like 'What the Bleep', it is starting out in very limited release.   But word is getting out and it is going to be going around the country and around the world.

I think many of the Paradigm Shifters would be interested in this movie.   Could you pass this information along to them?

I also think the questions on the website might give our group ideas for future discussion topics.

Blessings.

Meeting  of a subgroup would help, I believe. There just seems to be too many questions and with more answers, it just leads to more questions. Fun huh?
An Emails section would be just the ticket to allow everyone to see the correspondence. Good idea!!

Thank you, Jim.

We really enjoyed your presence, too, and hope to see you often.  Several have asked about meeting more often, but many more of us have felt that the current monthly schedule is close to the limit of our schedules.  I sure wish I were retired; then I, too, would want to do it more often.  Certainly I think this topic is worth further discussion.  Perhaps a subgroup could meet more often.

Yours is the first email received by the web site directly.  Since I am the keeper of the web site, I am so far the only one who has seen it.  Would you mind if I share it with the group?  One way to do that without filling everyone's mailboxes would be to post it on the web site - perhaps in a new “Emails” section that would function somewhat like "Letters to the editor".  If you say OK, I'll do it, and then announce the addition.

Along similar lines, I'm hoping to start a separate wiki site soon where everyone could make entries directly – a chance to start an online dialogue and/or knowledge sharing.

Thanks for sharing, and I look forward to much more.

Dear Paradigm Shifters:
I thoroughly enjoyed my first meeting with you last Saturday, November 12th. With events in the world moving along at warp speed, I just thought that I would suggest that we meet more often. I guess there's not enough time for anything when you're living in compressed time. Oh! by-the-way, time is not actually be compressed but creation energy is. Want to know more?

Blessing to all, Jim Beene
