Haunted Sites of New York


Alexandria Bay
Boldt Castle-The castle was built in early 1900's, but was never completed due to the death of the builder's wife. Heartbroken, he left it, never to return. On many nights, a light can be seen in the uppermost windows of the castle,  and it is said to be the ghost of Mrs. Boldt.


Albany
Capitol building - The Assembly Chamber is said to be haunted by a custodian, nicknamed George. A dark shadow has also been seen on the fifth floor of the building. A psychic visited the building an reported to be in contact with a Samuel Abbot, who had actually died in a fire some years ago.

Cherry Hill - a unidentified ghost has been seen on the lower floors and terace. Although investigations have been done, the identity of the spirit has yet to be found.

College of Saint Rose - There are 4 houses reported here to be haunted. 3 of them have been identified to some extent. One is a 7 year old little girl killed in a fire, another is a priest, another is a musician who commited suicide in Chicago and another is a gardener. The Dean of Students has all the details and gives a presentation on it every year. Many students have witnessed many things.

Junior College of Albany/Russell Sage- Fine Arts building on Albany Campus have numerous ghosts that still can be heard. Buildings were at one time a Children’s Sanitarium (Parsons’s home for children) is located next door. This was a branch of the above.

Lindenwald- Built by Judge William Van Ness in 1797, residents have reported many strange thing. A white apparition has been sighted here, but none are sure who it could be. Some say it is a woman who was killed at the gatehouse, while others say it is the butler who hanged himself in the orchard. Still others believe it to be Aaron Burr, who is known to hide here after killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel. Strange odors have been reported in the kitchen and violin music has been heard in a secong floor bedroom that has remained empty for some time. A secret room was discovered in the attic some time ago. Inside was found a rocking chair, and pig whittled out of wood and old, faded calling card with the name Aaron Burr.

New York Central Railroad Tracks- according to the story, every year on April 27, the phanton train that carried Abraham Lincoln's body rides again. After the president was killed April 14, 1865, this train carried his body on a tour of the New York country side. Along with his bidy, the train carried about three hundred mourners. Every year the train makes this historic journey. Although Abe's ghost has never been seen on the train, many others have. There id a ghostly band which plays eerie dirges on a flat car, while a crew of skeletons is said to drive the train itself. Blue coated soldiers are seen on the other cars, some carry coofins on their backs.

University At Albany-Pierce Hall- Pierce hall located on Alumni Quad is said to be haunted by the spirit of a woman. Nobody knows who she is or why she walks the halls late at night. Many students have claimed to seen this ghostly specter all year round endlessly walking the halls.

Astoria
American Museum of the Moving Image - Foot steps following you at night in the office area. A deep voice herd for a man in the hallway. People heard talking from the vents when no one else was in the building. A black women, in a white dress seen sitting at the desk in the entence lobby.

Bayside, Queens
Fort Totten - 150-year-old military base also an old Indian burial ground (under soccer field). Many areas are haunted. In mid-May '00, one guard was dozing in his patrol car at night when he heard a knock on the window. He opened his eyes to see 2 men, one on either side of the car, pointing at him & laughing. He could see right thru them. This guard (an ex-marine) never believed in ghosts & taunted the others who did. The other guards wouldn't go to that area at night & warned him that it was haunted, but he didn't believe them then.

Binghamton
The Roberson Museum and Science Center
- It is believed to be haunted by the ghost of Alonzo Roberson, the man who built the Roberson Mansion, which is part of the museum complex. It is said that he haunts the elevator and halls of his home.

Bronxville
Concordia College- All of the dorms here are reported to be haunted . Feth Hall is inhabited by a ghastly Rev Dr. Henry Feth. Bohm Hall is haunted by a girl who was raped in it a number of years ago, and Sieker Hall is haunted by a pre-seminary student who died of pneumonia many years ago. Rippe Hall is haunted by a little girl who lived in the house that was there prior to the dorm being built.

Buffalo
Holiday Inn - a ghostly little girl has been seen running through the halls. The girl is believe to be Tanya, who died in a house which stood on the same spot as the motel. The house had caught fire and little Tanya burned to death. Visitors and employees have seen the apparition jumping on beds and running down the halls.

Naval Serviceman's Park- The U.S.S. Sullivans is said to be haunted by one of five brothers who died in World War II. The ghost's name is believed to be George. He is said to be roaming the ship looking for his younger brothers. On board, there is a room that has pictures of all five of the brothers. People have taken photographs of the portraits, but the picture of George doesn't come out quite right, it usually comes out as a white blur. This ship is a memorial to the brothers and is named after them.

Cobleskill
Bull's Head Inn- The apparition of Mrs. John Stacy has been seen here on the first floor  dining room, wearing a white nightgown. This room used to be her bedroom when she resided here from 1920 to 1966. The Inn has been home to many strange events since obtaining its liquor license. Mrs. Stacy was an active member of the Women's Christian Temperence Union and so is blamed for tossing napkins and silverware at the bar. She most frequently appears to the bartenders.

Cohoes
Cohoes Music Hall - Cohoes Music Hall is a typical, old-style music hall with a few twists. Noted ghosts include the Black Lady, a shadowy, female figure seen and heard in the balcony. There is another ghost of a man, who has been heard and seen both onstage and in the wings; this is apparently the spectre of a stage manager who was crushed by a sandbag.

East Greenbush
Snyders Lake - The NightWatchman: Brutally murdered as a young man. He was never able to see his attacker so he now takes his anger out on the children that go to the camp on the lake. Numerous news articles are available from the times union on the abductions. The Caretaker: Died 2 years ago. Roams the area and checks the bathrooms for good conditions occasionally. Webbed: Boy with webbed fingers was an excellent swimmer till he drowned at the camp trying to save a boy. The other boy lived but webbed got stuck under the dock and drowned. Now when children are drowning and drifting further into the lake he pushes them into shore.

Frewsburg
Grunsey Hollow Cemetery- The cemetery is haunted by a mentally challenged child who was stoned to death in the 1800's. People have seen graves glow, glowing balls of light, animals hung on the cross, and heard children laughing and playing.

Fort Edward
Jane Mcrea House - It was built back in the revolutionary war period in the town of Fort Edward. The town played a strategic part in winning the war. The story goes that Jane Mcree was hunted down by a band of indians and scalped in a closet in this house. People who have lived in the house experience lights turning on and off, as well as footsteps coming from the attic. The occupants will turn all the lights off when they leave at night and come home to have all the lights in the house turned on. Screams are sometimes heard coming from the closet where Jane met her grusome death.

Geneva
Belhurst Castle- The ghost of Belhurst Castle is believed to be that of a beautiful Italian opera singer, who fled from Spain with her lover. According to the story, one night the couple raced to their secret tunnel. Just when they were within the safety of the tunnel the tunnel itself collapsed in on them,  killing the opera singer. Over the years, dozens of guests have reported seeing a woman in white standing silently on the front lawn in the middle of the night.

Grand Island
Whitehaven Cemetery- A young girl who haunts the holiday inn next door her grave stone glows. There is also a young woman who died of AIDS in the early 1990's there and she can be seen on her grave marker holding her infant son. There is also a man who died in the Gulf War walking around. He is supposedly looking for his pregnant wife

Greenburgh
Bradywine Battleground- The ghost of a headless Revolutionary War soldier has been seen on a horse along the Hudson River looking for his head.

Herkimer
Beardsly Castle(spelling?) - the beardsley family (long dead) has been seen many times there.

Hudson
Dietz House - Built in the 1830s, it is believed that Mabel Parker haunts her former home. She is heard walking up the steps to the second floor hallway and into her old bedroom. She is said to pull the covers off of anyone sleeping in her old room.

Hyde Park
Hoyts Mansion- A mansion that is haunted by the family members whom all killed themselves. The family was  reportedly very strange. They had all under ground entrances to their house. Their home is in the middle of the woods in between two popular mansions, The Mills Mansion and the Vanderbilt Mansion.

Kingston
Montrepose Cemetary - Activity and energy surrounding that graveyard.

Lewstion
Mcdonalds - It is said that a man was killed in this old buliding before it was Mcdonalds. When you eat down stairs you can feel the chill and hear the man crying out for help.

Loundonville
Loudon Cottage - The ghost of Abraham Lincoln has been seen in this house, who was owned by the woman who was sitting next to Lincon when he was shot. The dress Clara Harris wore that fatefull night was splattered with the brains and blood of the former president. When she arrived home, she hung the dress in a closet and had it walled up. Clara was later killed by her jealous husband in fron tof her children He did so because of all the attention she gave to her children. Her apparition is also seen roaming around the cottage.

Manhattan
Brittany Hotel - Corner of East 10th and Broadway. Phantom music have been heard,  lights have been seen floating in the halls, footsteps are heard in the rooms and people report feeling presences "watching" them.

Menands
Albany Rural Cemetery - Ghostly Black figures such as cars, men, and unexplainable large masses can be seen here at dusk. A misteriously transparent couple can also be seen floating through the cemetery at night with their pj's on.

Mohawk Valley
Beardslee Castle- Built in 1860 by Guy R. Beardslee. This castle is home to many ghosts. In the 1940s, the castle was turned into a restaurant. Since then, many employees and guests have reported all kinds of crazy stuff. Orbs have been spotted, as well as apparitions that range in color, from blue to white and dark green to red. These have been sighted floating in and out of rooms. The ghost of a former owner, Anton Christensen has been seen in the upstairs corner where he hanged himself. The shadow of a large man has been seen on the top floor and just off the main lobby. Silverware and chairs have been witnessed moving across the rooms on there own. It is though that the events can be traced back to when a French outpost stood here on this spot. Indians had tunneled under the outpost with barrels of gunpwder to blow it up. Unfrtunately, the barrels ignited and killed the indians.

Newfane
Van Horn Mansion- It is believed that the ghost of Malinda Van Horn haunts her former home. Her apparition has been sighted mostly in her upstairs bedroom and standing by a second floor hall window. She has also been reported satnding in the middle of the street in front of the house. During some renovations, the workers met her smokey form in an archway on the second floor. The workers left and never came back, a new crew had to be hired to finish.

New York City
Bay Ridge Apartments - haunted by numerous, unknown spirits.

Central Park, Wollman Ice Rink- The apparitions of two sisters, Rosetta and Janet Van der Voort are seen still skating on the ice every winter. The sisters lived in Manhatten during the 1800s and spent most of the winter skating figure eights on the ice. The died within a few months of each other in 1880. They were first sighted skating on the frozen lake in Central Park during WW1. One sister is seen in a red dress while the other wears a purple one, both sen gliding just above the ice.

Clinton Court- The ghost of a mutiness sailor not only haunts this building, but is said to be responsible for two more ghosts here. In the 1820s the building was used as as a carriage house for Gov. George Clinton. Old Moor, as the sailor is known, appeared to a coachman's wife, scaring her so much that she fell down a winding stairway and died. Her ghost appears in the courtyard. The second poor soul was that of one of the Governor's children, who was frightened by the ghost and fell from a second floor porch. The child's form has been seen in the courtyard.

Clinton Street Brownstone - Haunted by a young girl who died there, while her father was attempting to perform an abortion on her. Cesa Rist was the daughter of a doctor, and when he had learned she became pregnant by her boyfriend, the good doctor tried to abort the baby at home. He screwed up and she died on the table.

The Dakota- This building was built in 1884 and was the sight where Roman Polanski fimled Rosemary's Baby. In 1965, workers were renovating Apartment number 77 when they met the apparition of a small boy who walked down a hallway between two rooms. The boy was seen by many witnesses. These apartments also became home for John Lennon, who was shot to death in the doorway of the building on December 8, 1980. His apparition has been seen on the sidewalk in front of the building.

Empire State Building- The ghost a woman haunts the observation deck. She is believed to be a woman who commited suicied by jumping from the deck after learning that her lover was killed during WW2. She is seen in her twenties, wearing bright red lipstick and dressed in 40s style clothing.

Hotel Des Artistes - This ghost likes to touch people. The ghost's unidentified apparition has been seen by many tenants.

Martha Washington Hotel- It is believed that a twelfth floor room in this building is haunted by the ghost of an elderly woman who once lived at the hotel. One woman reported that she awoke to a pillow being held over her face. There have been two previous tenants found dead within that particular room.

New Amsterdam Theatre - Supposedly haunted by a Ziegfeld Follies chorus girl, Olive Thomas, who killed herself. She has been seen on the stage and in one of the dressing rooms by workmen that were doing repairs on the theatre. She holds a blue glass bottle (reportedly this is the bottle that held the poison that killed her).

Old Merchant's House-This local museum is said to be haunted by a 19th century woman named Gertrude Tredwell. Her apparition has been seen in the canopy bed in the front bedroom and near the fireplce in the parlor. Supposedly, these two ares cannot be photographed properly.

St Mark's In-The-Bowery- This church was originally built in 1660 by the first governor of New York, Peter Stuyvesant. After he died, his body was buried here in a vault. In 1799, the old church had been torn down to make room for a new one on the same spot. Four ghost have been reported here. The apparition of a waman sits in the center aisle in the middle of the nave, while anoth female ghost, gressed in a wide skirt stand by the rear entrance. Another ghost has been seen sitting in the balcony by the organ. The last ghost is said to be that of Peter Stuyvesant, the first governor.

Greenwich Village - One If By Land, Two If By Sea Restaurant - Once a carriage house owned and operated by Aaron Burr, the place is apparently overflowing with ghosts. Not the least of which is supposedly Burr's own beloved daughter, Theodosia Burr Alston, who vanished off the coast of North Carolina while on her way to visit her father in New York. Apparitions of Theodosia and various other spirits have actually been seen. Several women sitting at the bar have had their earrings popped off by an enamored Theodosia.

Niagara
Devil's Hole- In this 20 ft deep cave a dark and 'evil' presence has been felt. This cave was the scene of a massacre, horrible disaster and many freak accidents.

Oldforge
Big Moose Inn - A pregnant woman that was murdered by her fiance' and thrown in tothe lake. He spirit can still be seen here.

Oswego
Lighthouse - said to be haunted by three men who went up there to change the lightbulb during a storm and they never came back.

Plattsburgh
Plattsburgh Air Force Base - Plattsburgh was a Revolutionary war Naval base strategically located between Canada, New York and Lake Champlain. On the "old side" of the base there is a cemetery where many soldiers are buried. Security Police on patrol have reported many soldiers wandering through the cemetery and the neighboring crematorium (building number 666). The military finance building used to be a surgical hospital. The basement walls are still painted red, to hide the blood stains. Security Police K-9 units refuse to go into the basement of this building. At the very entrance to the Old Base are two pillars that are original architecture. Sentries working this gate have reported a Revolutionary War era soldier marching back and forth between the pillars, standing guard.

Poughkeepsie
Marist College - As the story goes, Shelly was killed by a jealous boyfriend in the school's cafeteria. Since then, she has been a presence in Sheahan Hall, where she lived. Most of her activity involves folding clothes, opening/closing doors, screwing with televisions and the occasional bump in the night. She may also be linked to some strange occurrences at a grotto dedicated to those who died at Marist.

Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery - Countless spirits roam the grounds, and have done so for years. Some can-and-want to be seen, or otherwise noticed, while some are said to just "observe" those of us still here.

Rochester
Durand Eastman Park/Beach - The Lady in White roams searching for her daughter who had supposedly been raped and murdered by unknown assailants. There are many different versions to the story, but this is indeed a documented fact in the Irondequoit libraries, as well as the files of the police department.

Rome
Fort Stanwix- A Revolutionary War fort rebuilt on it's original site. Many soldiers in period dress have been sighted in various places through out the fort. Around sunrise you can sometimes hear drums and fifes.  A lady crying for her sick child can be heard also. A one legged man has also been spotted by employees as well as tourists sitting in one of the barracks. At just about any time of the day or night you can hear footsteps, voices,  and sounds of someone sweeping a floor, chopping wood. Such antics as lights going on and off by themselves, doorknobs turning, and the security alarm system being tripped goes on apparently all the time..

Seneca Falls
Seneca Falls Historical Museum - The museum is supposedly haunted by a former resident named Edward Mynderse. The ghost is referred to as "Edward" and has been known to throw stuffed animals across rooms and remove tacks from the storm window plastic. He is a friendly ghost, but a practical jokester. Museum goers are informed of the ghost upon visiting the museum.

Schenectady
Veil Cemetery on State Street- Several of the statues are said to bleed from their eyes and tops of their heads, and sometimes "cry out" at night. Apparitions, both white and black, have been sighted roaming through the graves and sitting up in trees. The old church on the site houses many apparitions. Strange lights can be seen in the windows, and an eerie "singing" can be heard just beyond the front doors.

Sherrill
The Mansion House - The house is now a bed and breakfast and it is believed that the bottom two floors are haunted.For some unknow reason, these floors are said to be off limits.

Springville
Western House - This was once an old hotel and saloon, but is now apartments and a restaurant. It is said to be haunted by the daughter of the first owner, her name is Christine.

Staten Island -
Billop House - (foot of Hylan Blvd)- occasional apparations of several Revolutionary War era ghosts appear in the house and out in the garden.

Canard Mansion - (now St. John's Univ-Howard Av)- Ghostly face of man who committed suicide in the 1890's appears at window of second floor.

Old Bermuda Inn - (Arthur Kill Rd) Spectre of a young woman walks through the dining areas, and also appears on stairs.

Vanderbilt Tomb - (Moravian Cemetary-Richmond Rd)- According to stories, photos taken of people at the tomb either have additional (unknown) persons present when developed, or just the tomb appears with no image of the people who posed.

Stony Brook
Mill House- Abandoned house where a woman in white can be seen pacing the top floor of the house,  holding a candle.

Sunnyside
Irvington- The former home of Washington Irving is reportedly haunted by his ghost, as well as those of his nieces who used to take care of the place. It seems that Mr. Irving likes to pinch women, while the nieces have been known to tidy the place up at night after the interpreters have left for the evening.

Syracuse
Community Senior Center (former Fire House Station) - Located on Seneca Turnpike (Rt. 173) south of the city b/n Salina and Midland Aves, this former fire station is host to a spirit that walks the stairs and upper floor.

Split Rock Quarry-On July 12, 1918, a munitions plant exploded at Split Rock Quarry, west of Syracuse. It took the lives of 50 men with it. 15 were never identified and buried in a common grave. More than 80 years after the plant blew up, the spirits of the dead still roam the ledges or stand on the ruined rock crusher of the old quarry. They glow in shades of green and yellow, a ghostly after-image of the effects of picric acid, the bitter, and toxic explosive that once stained miners' skin yellow-green.

Troy
Forest Park cemetery - Forest Park cemetery is known to be in the top ten haunted cemeteries in the country. It is an old deserted cemetery- no new bodies have been buried there for many years. Many ghosts have been sighted there, photos of strange things have also been taken and published in the local newspapers. A renowned psychic says the cemetery was build on an Indian burial ground, and the spiritual activity is very turbulent and malicious. Also known as Pinewood to most locals because of the street name. It is rumoured to be a Gateway to Hell. Life magazine listed it as a top ten haunted place and it is associated with Stull, Kansas, another known gateway to Hell. Some of the headless statues here have been reported to have had blood dripping from them.

Oakwood Cemetery - Rumored site of satanistic gatherings, many accounts of black shadows, glowing orbs, and loud wails coming from within the locked gates at night.

The Landmark Theatre - An apparition known as the "lady in white" has been seen by numerous people over many years. She is usually seen lingering quietly in the balcony of the theater.

West Hall, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - This building served as a hospital prior to becoming a classroom building for RPI. The ghost of a lady in white is often seen walking the halls. She is said to be a nurse that died while trying to save children in a fire that gutted the building . The ghost is welcomed and well liked. Signs jokingly say things such as "Please turn off the lights for the ghost when you leave."

Langsingburgh high school- In room 243 there is sightings of dead children running around and playing. These children are from a huge mass murder in 1936, by one of the teachers . Also the killer  himself, John Cipperley, is seen waving an ax.

Utica
Stanley Theatre- There is a certain seat that  the theatre will not sell a ticket for, nor will they tell you why the seat is not for sale. Many people who have sat in this seat clain to have felt someone sit on them, or try to force them out of the seat.

Victor
Powder Mills Park - haunted by many different spirits, including that of a bearded man in period dress.

Whitehall
Skene Manor- Colonel Skene, lived with only his housekeeper until he married later in life. The housekeeper killed the wife and buried her in a lead-lined coffin in the house. When the Colonel returned from a trip, the housekeeper told him that his wife left him because she was too lonely. Now a restaurant, the coffin is placed around a fountain. There have been reports of a hand with a huge ring that turns into a ball of light. On very rare occasions, a full image of a woman in a white dress is seen.

Youngstown
Old Fort Niagara - The French Castle at the fort is where most of the paranormal experiences have occurred.
